Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Wednesday addressed concerns in the Lok Sabha over the recent tariff actions taken by the United States against Indian exports. Goyal emphasized that the Indian government places the highest priority on protecting the interests of farmers, exporters, MSMEs, and workers, especially in the wake of external trade challenges.
Trump’s 10% Tariff on India
Goyal’s statement comes in response to the tariff policy introduced by former US President Donald Trump earlier this year. In April 2025, the US imposed a baseline reciprocal tariff of 10% on a group of countries, including India, aimed at addressing what the US termed as “unfair trade practices.”
These new tariffs have raised concerns about their potential impact on Indian exporters, especially those in labor-intensive sectors like agriculture, textiles, and MSMEs, which rely heavily on the US market.

Government’s Assurance and Measures
During his Lok Sabha address, Goyal stated:
“The government attaches utmost importance to safeguarding the interests of farmers, exporters, workers, and MSMEs.”
He added that the Ministry of Commerce is continuously reviewing the situation and engaging with relevant stakeholders and international counterparts to mitigate any negative impact.
The Indian government has also begun exploring bilateral discussions and diplomatic measures to ensure minimal disruption to its trade ecosystem.
Industry Concerns
Industry bodies have expressed concern about the potential slowdown in export volumes, especially for small manufacturers who already operate under tight margins. Many exporters are seeking clarity on tariff structures, exemptions, or compensatory support from the Indian government.
Quick Take
The US tariff move has added a layer of pressure on Indian exporters, particularly those from the MSME and agricultural sectors. Goyal’s assurance in Parliament reaffirms the government’s proactive approach to trade protection and diplomacy. The situation remains dynamic, with further developments expected as India continues to engage with the US on trade terms.
