Amid global attention on energy trade, Indian government sources have firmly refuted claims that Indian oil companies have stopped importing crude oil from Russia. This clarification comes just a day after reports suggested that state-run firms had halted such purchases — a claim that even drew a reaction from former US President Donald Trump.

Trump, in his statement, had described the alleged halt in Russian crude imports by India as a “good step”, seemingly welcoming the development. However, Indian officials were quick to counter that narrative.

Government sources said on Saturda

No Halt in Russian Crude Imports

y that there has been no change in India’s crude sourcing from Russia. The officials stressed that India’s energy decisions are based entirely on market forces and national interests, and not influenced by outside political commentary.

“The government’s position was made clear yesterday (Friday) — the country’s energy purchases are driven by market dynamics and national interest, and there have been no reports of Indian oil firms halting Russian imports,” one source reiterated.

This strong denial follows a wave of speculative reports, possibly linked to global diplomatic shifts and the ongoing focus on energy security. India’s crude oil policy, however, continues to prioritize affordability, supply security, and diversification, officials added.

India’s Energy Policy: Clear and Firm

India has maintained its position that it will continue to buy oil from any source, including Russia, as long as the terms are commercially viable. This policy has been consistent since the onset of the Ukraine conflict, despite pressure from Western nations to reduce dependency on Russian energy.

The Indian government’s response sends a clear message: energy security remains a sovereign priority, and commercial considerations dictate procurement decisions, not international political commentary.

Key Highlights:

  • Govt sources confirmed no halt in Russian crude imports by Indian firms.

  • India’s energy decisions are based on market dynamics and national interest.

  • Trump welcomed the reported halt, which officials now say was incorrect.
