Indian MEA Urges Compliance with US Laws After Detention and Self-Deportation Cases
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India has issued an advisory urging Indian students in the United States to comply with local laws following the detention of an Indian postdoctoral fellow and the self-deportation of another student. The advisory comes in the wake of escalating visa-related actions by U.S. authorities, raising concerns about the legal status of Indian students studying abroad.
Georgetown Fellow Detained for Alleged Propaganda Activities
Earlier this week, U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officials detained Badar Khan Suri, a postdoctoral fellow at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. Suri was accused of “actively spreading Hamas propaganda,” an allegation that led to his arrest. However, a U.S. federal judge has blocked his deportation while legal proceedings continue.
Despite his detention making headlines, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal clarified that neither Suri nor U.S. authorities have sought assistance from the Indian embassy or consulates in the U.S. regarding the matter.
Columbia University Student Self-Deports to Canada After Visa Revocation
In a separate case, Ranjani Srinivasan, a student at Columbia University and a citizen of India, self-deported to Canada after U.S. authorities revoked her visa. The DHS accused her of “advocating for violence and terrorism” and alleged involvement in activities supporting Hamas.
According to DHS, Srinivasan, a doctoral student in Urban Planning at Columbia University, had been staying in the U.S. on an F-1 student visa. Her visa was revoked on March 5, and she chose to leave the U.S. on March 11, using the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Home App for self-deportation.
The MEA stated that Srinivasan did not contact Indian diplomatic missions before her departure. “We only came to know of her departure from the U.S. through media reports,” Jaiswal confirmed.
MEA’s Response: India Committed to Supporting Students
Addressing media queries, MEA spokesperson Jaiswal reaffirmed India’s commitment to assisting its students abroad but emphasized that visa and immigration policies are sovereign matters handled by respective countries.
“When it comes to visa and immigration policy, it is something that lies within the sovereign functions of a country,” Jaiswal said. “We expect that when we have foreign nationals coming to India, they abide by our laws and regulations. Similarly, Indian nationals abroad must also comply with local laws and regulations.”
The MEA further stated that Indian embassies and consulates in the U.S. remain available to support students facing difficulties, but individuals must proactively seek assistance if needed.

The recent cases of detention and self-deportation highlight growing concerns over visa policies and student rights in the U.S. Immigration authorities have increasingly scrutinized foreign students, particularly in cases linked to political activism or security concerns.

“The knowledge partnership and participation of our students in U.S. universities is an important element of our relationship, and we want to foster these ties further,” he said.
With a sizable number of Indian students currently enrolled in U.S. universities, the MEA’s advisory serves as a reminder for compliance with local laws to ensure a smooth academic experience without legal complications.
