In a deeply tragic incident, an Air India flight bound for London crashed near Ahmedabad airport on Thursday, leading to the loss of over 170 lives, according to early reports. The devastating crash took place during the aircraft’s takeoff and has sent shockwaves across the nation.
The accident occurred in the Dharpur area, near the Meghaninagar locality, where thick clouds of smoke were seen billowing into the sky shortly after the crash. Emergency services rushed to the spot within minutes, but the magnitude of the incident has left the country mourning.
The ill-fated flight was scheduled to depart for London, carrying around 242 passengers on board, including crew members. Sources believe the crash took place during the aircraft’s ascent phase, though further investigations will confirm the exact cause.
“There was a loud explosion, and within seconds, the sky was filled with smoke. The ground shook,” said an eyewitness who lives close to the crash site.
The impact of the crash was severe, resulting in a massive fire that engulfed the wreckage. Firefighters, police personnel, and disaster response teams were deployed immediately to bring the blaze under control and initiate rescue efforts.
As news of the crash spread, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu expressed their deep sorrow and extended condolences to the families of the deceased.
“Deeply pained by the tragic plane crash in Ahmedabad. My thoughts are with the families who lost their loved ones. Prayers for the injured,” PM Modi said in a post on X.
President Murmu also conveyed her grief, stating that the entire nation stands in solidarity with those affected by the crash.
Multiple teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), local fire brigades, and the Ahmedabad Police were seen conducting rescue and recovery operations. The primary focus remains on finding any survivors, although the scale of destruction has made the task extremely difficult.
The area around the Dharpur-Meghaninagar zone has been cordoned off, and authorities have urged residents to stay away from the site to allow unhindered rescue efforts.
“It’s a heart-wrenching scene. The wreckage is scattered across a wide area. Emergency teams are doing their best,” said a senior official at the scene.
Locals described scenes of horror, with the crash reportedly followed by a huge fireball and an explosion that shook nearby buildings. Many rushed out of their homes, only to witness flames engulfing the aircraft wreckage.
Some residents attempted to help before official teams arrived, but the intensity of the flames and thick smoke made it nearly impossible to get close.
While initial speculation points to a technical failure during takeoff, aviation experts and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) will be conducting a full-scale investigation. A team of aviation safety officers has already been dispatched to the location.
The black box and flight data recorder will play a crucial role in uncovering what went wrong in the final moments before the crash.
“Every aspect will be examined – from pre-flight checks to weather conditions and possible technical glitches,” confirmed an aviation authority.
Air India acknowledged the incident and expressed condolences to the families of passengers and crew. The airline has set up emergency helpline numbers and is coordinating with local authorities for support and assistance.
“We are devastated by this tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of all affected,” the airline stated.
The incident has triggered a wave of grief across social media and news platforms. People from across the country, including celebrities, politicians, and common citizens, are expressing their condolences and calling for a thorough investigation.
Temples, mosques, and churches across the city are holding special prayers for those who lost their lives in the accident.
The Ahmedabad plane crash marks one of the deadliest aviation disasters in recent times, casting a dark shadow over the country’s air travel sector. As rescue teams continue their tireless efforts and families await answers, the entire nation grieves this profound loss.
More details are expected to emerge as investigations progress. For now, the focus remains on supporting victims’ families and ensuring a thorough probe into the causes of this catastrophic incident.
