Bank Holiday Today on November 5: Banks Closed for Guru Nanak Jayanti and Kartika Purnima — Check Full RBI List

New Delhi, November 5, 2025:
As India celebrates Guru Nanak Jayanti and Kartika Purnima today, banks in several states across the country will remain closed on November 5 (Wednesday). The closures are as per the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) official holiday calendar released at the start of the year, which governs bank holidays across public and private sector banks.

This nationwide observance follows the festive season of Dussehra and Diwali in October and marks another significant cultural and religious occasion in November. The holidays will affect bank operations in multiple cities, while digital banking channels will continue to operate seamlessly.

Upcoming Bank Holidays in November 2025

In addition to today’s closure, the month of November 2025 includes several other regional holidays as notified by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI):

  • November 6 (Thursday): Banks in Bihar and Meghalaya will remain closed for the Nongkrem Dance Festival and Bihar Legislative Assembly general elections.

  • November 7 (Friday): Banks in Meghalaya will observe a holiday for the Wangala Festival.

  • November 8 (Saturday): Banks in Karnataka will remain closed on account of Kanakadasa Jayanthi.

The RBI categorizes holidays under Negotiable Instruments Act, Real-Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) holidays, and Banking Closures, varying by region depending on state-specific festivals and events.

Digital Banking, UPI, and ATM Services to Function Normally

While physical bank branches will remain closed today, customers can continue to perform financial transactions using digital platforms. Services such as internet banking, mobile banking apps, Unified Payments Interface (UPI), and ATM withdrawals will be available as usual.

These services allow users to complete essential tasks including:

  • Fund transfers (NEFT/RTGS/IMPS)

  • Bill payments and recharges

  • Balance inquiries and mini statements

  • UPI-based transactions via apps like PhonePe, Google Pay, and Paytm

However, services that require in-person visits — such as large cash deposits, cheque clearances, demand draft issuance, or loan documentation — will not be available today.

Customers Advised to Plan Banking Tasks in Advance

Since banks remain closed across several states, customers are advised to plan their financial activities ahead of the holidays. Individuals requiring branch-level assistance should complete their transactions before or after the designated holidays to avoid inconvenience.

Digital and online banking have significantly reduced the impact of such holidays on routine financial operations, enabling customers to manage their accounts effortlessly.

Significance of Guru Nanak Jayanti and Kartika Purnima

Guru Nanak Jayanti, also known as Prakash Gurpurab, marks the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism. It is celebrated with religious processions, kirtans, and community service across India, particularly in Punjab, Delhi, and northern states.

Kartika Purnima, on the other hand, is a Hindu festival observed on the full moon day of the Kartika month. It holds deep spiritual significance for devotees, symbolizing enlightenment and devotion. The day is also marked by fairs, temple visits, and charity across states like Odisha, Bihar, and West Bengal.

Given the religious importance of these festivals, several state governments and the RBI designate this day as a banking holiday every year.

Banking Schedule to Resume from November 6

Regular banking operations across most parts of the country will resume tomorrow, Thursday, November 6, 2025, as per standard working hours.

However, customers in Bihar, Meghalaya, and Karnataka should note their respective state-specific holidays later this week and plan transactions accordingly.

As digital transactions continue to grow, the impact of physical bank closures is becoming less disruptive — though timely awareness of such holidays ensures smoother financial planning for individuals and businesses alike.

Summary

Today, November 5, 2025, marks a bank holiday across multiple Indian cities due to Guru Nanak Jayanti and Kartika Purnima. While physical branches will remain closed, digital and ATM banking services will function normally. The next set of bank holidays is scheduled between November 6 and November 8 in select states.

For uninterrupted access to financial services, customers are encouraged to utilize online and mobile banking platforms and plan cash-related transactions around the designated closures.
