India's LNG Buyers in Talks for US Deals
Indian buyers, including Indian Oil Corp., Bharat Petroleum Corp Ltd, and Gail India Ltd., are negotiating long-term LNG contracts with US suppliers ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s expected meeting with President Donald Trump. These talks come as energy leaders gather for the India Energy Week conference in Delhi, with LNG at the center of discussions.
Pankaj Jain, India’s Oil Secretary, confirmed that companies are in discussions to secure LNG from US exporters. Among the key players in these talks are Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum, and Gail India, with some even considering investments in US LNG projects. The Indian government has expressed the urgency of these negotiations, with talks expected to pick up pace as the Modi-Trump summit approaches.
In particular, Cheniere Energy, one of the leading US LNG exporters, is being eyed for long-term deals, although specifics remain under wraps. The aim is to strengthen ties with the Trump administration while securing competitive LNG prices for India.
Ahead of the Modi-Trump summit, Indian officials are intensifying talks with the US to strike deals that could strengthen bilateral relations. While the LNG purchase remains a key priority, Modi is expected to discuss broader issues, including trade tariffs, defense equipment, and other energy-related deals.
Indian importers, however, are cautious, looking to ensure the best terms before committing to any contracts, as there are challenges related to the availability of spare supply. Talks are likely to extend over the next few years, as global LNG demand grows.
India is not alone in its pursuit of more US LNG. Asian nations like Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan, along with the EU, are also looking to purchase more LNG from the US. This global shift is partly driven by the desire to reduce trade surpluses with the US and avoid the threat of tariffs on energy imports.
While India’s LNG imports are set to rise in the coming decade, it remains uncertain how many of the current talks will result in signed deals. The US remains the top LNG exporter, and as India looks to reduce its carbon footprint, the nation’s growing LNG demand aligns with its goals for cleaner energy sources.
India’s focus on energy diversification and discussions with US LNG suppliers highlight its evolving energy strategy, with an eye on strengthening ties with the US and positioning itself as a major player in the global energy market.
