Infosys’ Fourth Round of Trainee Exits Raises Total Impact to Nearly 800

Infosys, India’s second-largest IT services provider, has dismissed an additional 195 trainees from its Mysuru campus following internal assessment failures, as per emails sent on April 29. This development marks the fourth round of exits, pushing the total number of impacted trainees to approximately 800 since February 2025. Out of these, around 250 affected individuals have enrolled in upskilling programs offered through partnerships with platforms such as UpGrad and NIIT, while approximately 150 trainees have registered for outplacement services provided by the company.

Infosys Strengthens Upskilling and Outplacement Support for Affected Trainees

Infosys has collaborated with UpGrad to offer Business Process Management (BPM) training and with NIIT for IT-focused training modules, aiming to assist the trainees in charting alternative career paths. While the company terminated about 240 trainees in a major round on April 18, similar actions earlier in February saw over 300 trainees dismissed, followed by around 30-35 exits in March. The company is offering free training programs to those affected, aiming to mitigate the impact of the layoffs and equip the trainees with new professional skills.

These dismissals come against the backdrop of a challenging business environment, with Infosys projecting muted revenue growth between 0 percent and 3 percent for the ongoing fiscal year. The slowdown in client spending across core markets has pressured Infosys to optimize its workforce and manage operating costs more rigorously.

Assessment Failures Trigger Termination Decisions Amid Demand Uncertainty

The company’s internal emails indicated that trainees were dismissed after failing to meet the qualifying criteria despite multiple support measures, including doubt-clearing sessions, extended preparation periods, mock assessments, and three final attempts. The latest communication to affected trainees, sent on April 29, noted that inability to meet the standards of the “Generic Foundation Training Program” would preclude them from continuing in the apprenticeship program.

For trainees willing to transition into BPM roles, Infosys is offering a 12-week sponsored training course, aimed at providing a smooth career shift within the organization’s broader ecosystem. Additionally, Infosys has promised one month’s ex-gratia payment along with official relieving letters for those leaving the company. For trainees unwilling to transition into BPM, the company is facilitating transportation arrangements from Mysuru to Bengaluru and covering standard travel expenses to their hometowns. Temporary accommodation support at the Employee Care Centre in Mysuru is also being extended until the departure date.

Regulatory Clearance: Karnataka Labour Department Finds No Labour Law Violations

Following concerns raised earlier this year, the Karnataka Labour Department conducted investigations into the reported trainee exits. On February 27, the department officially cleared Infosys of any labour law violations, confirming that the dismissed individuals were categorized as apprenticeship trainees rather than full-time employees. Officials clarified that layoffs under Indian labour laws pertain only to regular employment relationships and not to apprenticeship programs, thereby exempting Infosys from any violation.

The clearance came after inspections at Infosys’ Bengaluru and Mysuru campuses and was prompted by a directive from the Union Labour Ministry, which asked Karnataka authorities to investigate and resolve the dispute urgently. Infosys has consistently maintained that its actions align with its stated policies regarding freshers and apprentices, asserting that failure to meet academic and training standards justifies discontinuation from the training program.
