Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) is gearing up to lead India’s transition into a sustainable future. Chairman Mukesh Ambani announced that the company is building one of the world’s largest manufacturing ecosystems for green and clean energy, encompassing solar power, batteries, hydrogen, and bio-energy.
“This is our contribution to saving planet Earth from the looming climate crisis,” Ambani stated in a conversation with McKinsey’s Gautam Kumra.
Ambani explained that every new venture at Reliance begins with a simple but powerful question:
“What is the most critical need for India’s development, and how can we fulfill it at scale and over a long arc of time?”
This guiding principle has led RIL through its transformative journey—from polyester and petrochemicals to telecom and now renewable energy. According to Ambani, Reliance is confident in its ability to build the businesses of the future, thanks to its decades of experience and forward-looking strategy.
Reflecting on past milestones, Ambani described Jio’s $25 billion launch in 2016 as their biggest risk yet. At that time, many doubted whether India was ready for such advanced digital infrastructure. Yet, Reliance went ahead and revolutionized the telecom industry.
“The worst-case scenario was that we won’t earn much return. That’s okay because it was our own money,” Ambani said, highlighting the group’s belief in scale and bold execution.
As Reliance approaches its 50th anniversary in 2027, Ambani emphasized the broader mission:
“I want Reliance to continue to serve India and humanity even after completing 100 years. And I am confident it will.”
This long-term vision underlines the group’s commitment to nation-building, innovation, and sustainability. The green energy push is not just a business move—it’s a step toward deep-tech leadership and environmental responsibility.
RIL’s transformation journey is a testament to its readiness to take risks and invest in large-scale opportunities that shape India’s future. From telecom dominance with Jio to now leading the charge in green energy manufacturing, Mukesh Ambani’s strategy continues to focus on impact, innovation, and nation-first thinking.
