Tesla to Open Its First India Centre in Gurugram on November 26
India’s First Tesla Centre Set to Open in Gurugram on November 26, Marking Major Milestone for EV Market
In a significant development for India’s evolving electric mobility landscape, India’s first Tesla Centre will open its doors to the public on November 26 at Orchid Business Park in Gurugram, Haryana. The launch marks a major step in Tesla’s retail expansion strategy, coming just months after the company inaugurated its first experience centre in Mumbai, followed by another in New Delhi’s Aerocity.
With this new facility, the American EV giant is set to deepen its presence in a fast-growing luxury electric vehicle market where consumer interest is rising and competition intensifying.
Tesla formally entered India as its 50th global market, launching two variants of the Model Y earlier this year. Prices start at ₹59.89 lakh, with the long-range variant priced at ₹67.89 lakh. Both models are fully imported from Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory.
However, due to a 70% import duty, the Model Y is among the costliest Tesla vehicles sold anywhere in the world, nearly 30 percent more expensive than its US-market counterpart. Despite the premium pricing, early interest has been encouraging, with Tesla appealing to affluent urban buyers, early adopters and EV enthusiasts.

Data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA) shows that Tesla sold 104 units during September and October through retail channels listed on the government’s Vahan portal. While the numbers are modest, they reflect a steady build-up of demand even before Tesla’s full-fledged retail network is operational.
The opening of India’s first Tesla Centre in Gurugram is expected to accelerate enquiries, test drives and retail deliveries, potentially boosting Tesla’s India volumes in the coming months.
Tesla’s push into India also coincides with a leadership transition. The brand recently appointed Sharad Agarwal as its new India head in November. Agarwal brings a strong luxury automotive background, having previously led Lamborghini India between 2016 and 2024. He also served as Audi India’s head of sales and was the chief business officer at Classic Legends prior to joining Tesla.
With his expertise in scaling high-end automotive brands, Agarwal is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping Tesla’s India strategy—focusing on expanding retail infrastructure, enhancing customer experience and navigating policy discussions that could influence Tesla’s long-term manufacturing ambitions.
The opening of India’s first Tesla Centre comes at a time when the company faces challenging global headwinds. Tesla’s worldwide sales grew by just 7% in the September quarter, rising to 497,100 units versus 462,900 units a year earlier. Growth was notably slower than in previous years.
China, one of Tesla’s largest and most competitive markets, showed signs of fatigue. Sales dropped to a three-year low of 26,006 units in October 2025 amid intensifying competition from domestic EV makers and softening consumer demand.
These global pressures make the Indian market strategically meaningful, even though its volumes remain small. India offers long-term potential due to rising EV adoption, supportive government policies and increasing luxury vehicle penetration.
Tesla enters a luxury EV segment already dominated by established German competitors. Mercedes-Benz and BMW control nearly 80% of the premium electric car market in India, driven by strong consumer trust, early product launches and wide dealership coverage.
In October, the segment saw sales between 460 and 480 units, with strong performers including:
BMW iX1
Mercedes-Benz EQA
Volvo EC40
Kia EV6
BYD Sealion 7
Tesla’s Model Y now joins this competitive field, offering global brand value, advanced software, over-the-air updates and a recognizable technology appeal that could differentiate it from its German and Asian rivals.
Analysts expect the arrival of India’s first Tesla Centre to boost consumer interest, especially among buyers seeking high-performance EVs with technology-driven features.
The Gurugram centre is expected to serve as a flagship retail and service hub, giving customers direct access to Tesla advisors, vehicle displays, delivery support and possibly early service infrastructure. The move is part of a broader expansion plan that may include additional Tesla Centres across major metros as demand scales up.
Industry watchers believe that Tesla’s retail expansion signals a long-term commitment to India, even as the company evaluates the possibility of local manufacturing—an initiative that could dramatically lower prices and drive mass-market adoption.
The launch of India’s first Tesla Centre in Gurugram marks a landmark moment in India’s luxury EV journey. Despite global challenges and premium pricing due to high import duties, Tesla is gradually expanding its footprint, backed by rising consumer curiosity and the brand’s strong global pull.
As India’s electric vehicle market enters its next phase of growth, Tesla’s entry is set to intensify competition, broaden choices for buyers and potentially reshape the premium EV ecosystem.
