Trump Announces Reciprocal Tariffs, Targets India’s High Import Duties
In a significant policy shift, US President Donald Trump has announced that the United States will impose reciprocal tariffs on countries that levy high duties on American imports. During a Fox News interview alongside Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Trump particularly criticized India’s 100% import tariff on foreign-made cars, calling it one of the highest in the world.
During his conversation with PM Modi during the latter’s recent visit to the US, Trump highlighted the issue of high Indian tariffs on American products, particularly in the automobile sector.
“I told Prime Minister Modi yesterday—he was here. I said, ‘Here’s what we’re going to do: reciprocal tariffs. Whatever you charge, I’m charging.’ He said, ‘No, no, I don’t like that.’ But I said, ‘No, no, whatever you charge, I’m going to charge.’”
Trump criticized India’s import duty on cars, which stands at 100% for fully imported vehicles, calling it an unfair trade practice that disadvantages US automakers. He further emphasized that this approach will now be extended to all trade partners engaging in protectionist policies.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who was seated next to Trump during the interview, has been a vocal critic of India’s high import duties.
On Friday, Trump formally signed a proclamation stating that the US will implement reciprocal tariffs on imports from countries with high duties on American goods.
“For the purpose of fairness, I’ll charge reciprocal tariffs—meaning whatever countries charge the United States, we will charge them—no more, no less. If they tax us, we will tax them the exact same way.”
Trump specifically called out India, claiming that New Delhi imposes the highest tariffs globally.
The US-India trade relationship has long faced challenges over tariffs and market access. This latest move could further escalate trade tensions, particularly in key sectors like automobiles, technology, and agriculture.
With Tesla actively pursuing an India entry and US policymakers pushing for trade reforms, there is growing speculation about whether India will lower its import duties to prevent further trade friction.
Trump’s reciprocal tariff strategy marks a significant shift in US trade policy and could have far-reaching consequences for global trade relations. With India being directly named in his announcement, the future of India-US economic relations now hinges on whether New Delhi adjusts its trade policies or faces increased tariff barriers in the American market.
