Former US President Donald Trump has reiterated that his administration played a crucial role in preventing a full-scale war between India and Pakistan in 2025, following the heightened tensions after the Pahalgam terror attack.
In his recent statement, Trump highlighted how the United States used diplomacy and trade tactics to de-escalate the potentially dangerous standoff between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.
“We stopped a lot of wars. And these were serious – India and Pakistan, that was going on. Planes were being shot out of there. I think five jets were shot down, actually,” Trump claimed during his address.
The Pahalgam terror attack had created a volatile situation in South Asia, pushing both India and Pakistan into a high alert mode. The airspace was tense, and military movements on both sides suggested an imminent conflict.
Trump suggested that at the time, his administration was closely monitoring the crisis and took proactive steps.

He emphasized that the US used trade leverage and strong diplomatic backchannel communication to calm the situation. According to Trump, this strategy was effective in convincing both sides to step back from the brink.
While the exact details of the intervention remain unclear, Trump’s statement hints at a behind-the-scenes US role in reducing tension, possibly by influencing both countries through economic and diplomatic means.
This is not the first time Trump has made such a claim. Throughout his political career, he has frequently spoken about the importance of American diplomacy in solving global conflicts, including the India-Pakistan equation.
Although no official confirmation from India or Pakistan has followed this recent remark, Trump’s assertion brings renewed focus to international involvement in South Asian security issues.
Such statements can stir diplomatic sensitivities, especially given the complex and historically strained relations between India and Pakistan. Any suggestion of foreign intervention is often scrutinized or downplayed by the governments involved.
Nonetheless, Trump continues to claim that his leadership helped stop a major war, and that his use of trade diplomacy was the key factor in managing the crisis.
