Trump Orders Washington D.C. Cleanup Ahead of PM Modi’s Visit, Calls for ‘Symbol of Pride’
Washington, D.C. – U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered a comprehensive cleanup of the nation’s capital, citing concerns over its appearance ahead of visits from global leaders, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The initiative, which targets homeless encampments, graffiti, and deteriorating infrastructure, aligns with Trump’s broader push to restore order and safety in Washington, D.C.
During an address at the Department of Justice on Friday, Trump underscored the significance of presenting Washington D.C. as a model of pride and order for foreign dignitaries.
“We’re cleaning up our city. We’re cleaning up this great capital, and we’re not going to have crime,” Trump stated. “We’re going to take the graffiti down, and we’re already taking the tents down.”
The president emphasized that he did not want global leaders, including Modi, French President Emmanuel Macron, and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, to witness urban decay near federal buildings during their visits.
Trump detailed his efforts to remove encampments and address urban deterioration along major routes that foreign leaders traverse when visiting the White House and other federal sites.
“When Prime Minister Modi of India, the President of France, and the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom came to see me, I had the route run,” Trump said. “I didn’t want them to see tents, graffiti, broken barriers, or potholes in the roads. And we had it looking beautiful.”
The initiative, led by local and federal authorities, aims to:
Trump acknowledged that Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser has been cooperative in executing the cleanup efforts.
“We said there are tents galore right opposite the State Department. They have to come down. And they took them down right away. So far, so good,” he noted.
The tent removals, a key part of the plan, focus on reducing the visible impact of homelessness in tourist and diplomatic zones.
Beyond improving Washington D.C.’s aesthetics, Trump has vowed to make the capital crime-free, emphasizing his commitment to public safety.
“When people come here, they’re not going to be mugged or shot or raped. It’s going to be cleaner, better, and safer than ever before,” Trump asserted.
Key safety measures under this initiative include:
The crime-free pledge aligns with Trump’s larger push for law-and-order policies, aiming to restore Washington D.C.’s reputation as a safe and welcoming city.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Washington D.C. on February 13, marking his first official visit since Trump’s second inauguration. He became the fourth foreign leader to be hosted by the U.S. president this year.
The Modi-Trump meeting focused on:
Trump has also welcomed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, and Jordan’s King Abdullah II. Other recent visitors include French President Emmanuel Macron and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
The cleanup of Washington D.C. is part of Trump’s larger efforts to enhance America’s global image while pushing for law and order in major cities.
With high-profile summits and diplomatic meetings scheduled throughout 2025, the president’s focus remains on ensuring that Washington D.C. serves as a symbol of strength, order, and national pride.
