Cabinet to Decide on Vodafone Idea Relief Measures

Minister of State for Communications Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar clarified that any further relief for Vodafone Idea (Vi) on its adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues will only be decided collectively by the Union Cabinet. The decision would involve the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the Finance Ministry, Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, and the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).

Reports indicate that the DoT has submitted multiple relief options to the PMO. These include a fresh two-year moratorium on AGR payments, smaller annual instalments, and waivers on penalties and interest. However, no decision has been taken so far.

Government’s Position

Sekhar stressed that the government has already extended significant support by converting a large portion of Vodafone Idea’s debt into equity. “At this time, we don’t have any discussion or plan to change other than what we have done,” he said, adding that such matters are beyond the authority of a single ministry.

He underlined, “This is not a small amount of money to be decided by any one individual. Discussions must involve the Cabinet, Modi ji, Finance Ministry, and Telecom Minister Scindia.”

When asked if the PMO had received any fresh proposals, the minister responded, “not that we know of.”
