IDFC First Bank Rebounds After Fraud Shock — Investors Wonder If the Worst Is Already Priced In
Shares of IDFC First Bank rose more than 3 percent on February 26, hitting a four-day high after the stock recovered from a sharp decline triggered by the disclosure of a ₹590-crore fraud case involving bank employees. The rebound suggests that investors may be starting to look beyond the immediate crisis, although sentiment remains cautious.
At around 2 pm, the stock was trading about 3.3 percent higher at ₹72.52, recovering after hitting a 20 percent lower circuit earlier this week following the fraud disclosure. The recovery came after analysts suggested that the market had already priced in the worst-case financial and regulatory impact.
The bank had earlier confirmed that it returned ₹583 crore including principal and interest to Haryana government departments even while investigations continue.
The lender said:
“Even though the investigation in the matter is ongoing, we have paid out 100% of the principal and interest to the relevant departments of Haryana Government.”
The quick repayment helped stabilise investor confidence and supported the stock’s recovery.
Fraud Impact Seen as Manageable Compared With Bank’s Net Worth
Analysts believe that the financial impact of the fraud is relatively small compared with the bank’s overall balance sheet strength. The lender’s net worth stood at around ₹41,000 crore as of December, meaning the fraud exposure accounts for less than 2 percent of total net worth.
Market experts suggest that the sharp fall in the stock earlier this week may have overestimated the financial impact.
Chokkalingam G, founder of Equinomics Research, said:
“The bank’s net worth stood at ₹41,000 crore at the end of December, and the fraud impact is less than 2 percent of this. In that sense, the stock has been punished a bit more than required.”
He added:
“High-risk investors can consider buying the stock with a medium-to-long-term view.”
The bank is expected to make a 100 percent provision for the fraud amount during the current quarter. This could lead to either a marginal loss or a small profit in Q4FY26, compared with a net profit of ₹503 crore in Q3FY26.
Despite this short-term impact, analysts do not expect the fraud case to derail the bank’s long-term growth trajectory.

Arrests in Fraud Case Provide Some Relief to Investors
The Haryana State Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau has arrested four individuals in connection with the fraud case, including two former IDFC First Bank employees and two owners of a partnership firm.
The arrests were made as part of the ongoing investigation into suspicious transactions that reportedly included transfers worth nearly ₹100 crore to a Chandigarh-based firm.
The progress in the investigation has provided some reassurance to investors that authorities are actively addressing the issue and identifying those responsible.
Earlier, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini informed the State Assembly that most of the funds had already been recovered.
“Nearly Rs 556 crore, including nearly Rs 22 crore in interest, came back within 24 hours.”
The recovery of funds and arrests in the case have helped reduce uncertainty around the bank’s potential financial exposure.
Brokerages Remain Positive but Cut Target Prices
Brokerages remain cautiously optimistic on IDFC First Bank despite the recent developments. Emkay Global Financial Services maintained its “Add” rating on the stock but reduced the target price to ₹80 from ₹95, citing potential risks to business momentum and margins.
Analysts noted that there could be some second-order effects from the fraud incident, including possible withdrawals from government accounts and increased compliance costs.
Key concerns highlighted by analysts include:
-
Possible withdrawals from government accounts
-
Temporary pressure on margins
-
Slower business momentum
-
Higher compliance costs
However, most analysts believe that the bank’s long-term growth prospects remain intact.
