India’s Broking Industry Goes Full Tech: 91% Firms to Boost Spending as Algos and AI Reshape Trading Ecosystem
India’s broking ecosystem is undergoing a structural transformation, with technology emerging as the core growth driver. According to the StockTech 2026 survey released in Mumbai by the Association of NSE Members of India (ANMI), an overwhelming 91 percent of brokerage firms plan to increase technology spending in 2026.
The survey underscores a decisive shift toward a technology-led broking environment, with nearly 46 percent of firms preparing for a significant jump in tech budgets. From algorithmic trading systems to AI-driven compliance and API infrastructure, the industry is accelerating its digital pivot at an unprecedented pace.
ANMI, which represents nearly 900 stockbrokers across exchanges including National Stock Exchange of India, Bombay Stock Exchange, and Multi Commodity Exchange of India, says the industry is rapidly evolving from traditional brokerage models to data- and automation-driven platforms.
Algorithmic Trading and AI Take Centre Stage as Brokers Modernise Infrastructure
Algorithmic trading has emerged as a primary focus area. The survey reveals that:
-
36 percent of firms have already deployed algorithmic trading systems
-
40 percent plan to prioritise advanced trading strategies in 2026
-
66 percent are actively hiring IT talent to integrate AI and algo frameworks
The rise in automation reflects increasing demand for speed, efficiency, and risk control. However, retail adoption remains in its early stages. Only 8 percent of brokers reported high retail uptake of algorithmic trading, though 32 percent are planning or considering client-facing APIs to meet growing demand.
The survey also highlights key operational priorities:
-
51 percent cite regulatory compliance as the biggest hurdle in scaling algo trading
-
21 percent prioritise real-time risk surveillance
-
17 percent focus on strengthening cybersecurity frameworks
API-led infrastructure is quickly becoming foundational, with around 64 percent of brokers using APIs extensively or moderately for risk management, reporting, and integration functions.

SEBI and NSE Signal Deepening Tech Integration and Regulatory Alignment
Speaking at the event, Sunil Kadam, Executive Director at the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), highlighted the regulator’s own technology push. He said SEBI is increasingly deploying AI-driven tools for investor outreach and authentication processes, including pilot initiatives linked to the SEBI Check facility.
Kadam noted:
“As an industry and a regulator, we are constantly working together. We have adaptable technology for reaching out to the masses and for investor education and investor awareness. We are using technology for authentication and verification of funds transfer and we will constantly work towards protecting the interest of the investors.”
Meanwhile, Ashish Chauhan, Managing Director and CEO of the National Stock Exchange of India, emphasised the exchange’s technology ambitions.
Chauhan said:
“In less than two months on April 11, 2026, our response time in equities and equities derivatives will move to nanoseconds — one second equals 100 crore nanoseconds. Our currency segment is already operating at that level and equities will soon follow. We are building the capability to handle 10 crore transactions in a single second.”
He also flagged compliance with the Digital Personal Data Protection Act and revealed that the exchange is exploring agentic AI collaborations with global academia.

However, regulatory compliance remains a critical risk variable. With 51 percent of firms citing compliance as a challenge, future guidelines could influence cost structures and operational scalability.
ANMI WIRC chairman Arjun Shah summed up the industry’s transition, stating that brokers are evolving from “gatekeepers to enablers,” with technology simplifying access while maintaining integrity.
As Indian markets prepare for an AI-driven transformation, the brokerage industry’s aggressive tech spending signals a future defined by speed, automation, and regulatory sophistication — a shift that could reshape trading strategies and portfolio dynamics in the years ahead.
