consolidation, with the government working on a mega merger plan that could see smaller lenders merged with larger banks, sources told Moneycontrol.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"633\" data-end=\"828\">The objective behind the plan is to streamline the PSB landscape, resulting in fewer but stronger banks that can support the next phase of credit expansion and financial sector reforms.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"835\" data-end=\"866\">Banks Likely to Be Merged<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"868\" data-end=\"949\">According to government sources, the following mergers are under consideration:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"951\" data-end=\"1183\">\n<li data-start=\"951\" data-end=\"1081\">\n<p data-start=\"953\" data-end=\"1081\">Smaller banks: Indian Overseas Bank (IOB), Central Bank of India (CBI), Bank of India (BOI), and Bank of Maharashtra (BOM)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1082\" data-end=\"1183\">\n<p data-start=\"1084\" data-end=\"1183\">Larger banks: State Bank of India (SBI), Punjab National Bank (PNB), and Bank of Baroda (BoB)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote data-start=\"1185\" data-end=\"1313\">\n<p data-start=\"1187\" data-end=\"1313\">\u201cA proposal to merge IOB, CBI, data-end=\"1359\">Approval and Consultation Process<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1361\" data-end=\"1423\">The merger plan will follow a structured approval route:<\/p>\n<ol data-start=\"1425\" data-end=\"1842\">\n<li data-start=\"1425\" data-end=\"1559\">\n<p data-start=\"1428\" data-end=\"1559\">Record of discussion (RoD): An internal document capturing key deliberations, to be reviewed by senior Cabinet officials.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1560\" data-end=\"1652\">\n<p data-start=\"1563\" data-end=\"1652\">PMO review: The RoD will then be examined at the Prime Minister\u2019s Office level.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1653\" data-end=\"1842\">\n<p data-start=\"1656\" data-end=\"1842\">FY27 deliberations: Discussions and consultations with the banks involved are expected to continue throughout FY27, with the aim of finalizing the roadmap within the same year.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<blockquote data-start=\"1844\" data-end=\"1955\">\n<p data-start=\"1846\" data-end=\"1955\">\u201cThe government wants to build consensus internally before making any formal announcements,\u201d said a source.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 data-start=\"1962\" data-end=\"2000\">Context: PSB Consolidation Drive<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2002\" data-end=\"2124\">This move continues the government\u2019s medium-term banking sector reform strategy, reviving PSB consolidation efforts:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2126\" data-end=\"2387\">\n<li data-start=\"2126\" data-end=\"2259\">\n<p data-start=\"2128\" data-end=\"2259\">Between 2017 and 2020, 10 PSBs were merged into four larger entities, reducing the number of state-owned banks from 27 to 12.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2260\" data-end=\"2387\">\n<p data-start=\"2262\" data-end=\"2281\">Examples include:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2284\" data-end=\"2387\">\n<li data-start=\"2284\" data-end=\"2348\">\n<p data-start=\"2286\" data-end=\"2348\">Oriental Bank of Commerce and United Bank of India \u2192 PNB<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2351\" data-end=\"2387\">\n<p data-start=\"2353\" data-end=\"2387\">Syndicate Bank \u2192 Canara Bank<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2389\" data-end=\"2517\">These previous mergers aimed to create stronger, better-capitalized banks capable of competing on a global scale.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"2524\" data-end=\"2556\">NITI Aayog Recommendations<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2558\" data-end=\"2694\">The renewed merger push aligns with NITI Aayog\u2019s recommendations to privatize or restructure smaller PSBs such as IOB and CBI.<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2696\" data-end=\"2900\">\n<li data-start=\"2696\" data-end=\"2812\">\n<p data-start=\"2698\" data-end=\"2812\">Only a few large state-run banks \u2014 SBI, PNB, BoB, and Canara Bank \u2014 would be retained in government control.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2813\" data-end=\"2900\">\n<p data-start=\"2815\" data-end=\"2900\">The rest would be either privatized, merged, or have government stakes reduced.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote data-start=\"2902\" data-end=\"3150\">\n<p data-start=\"2904\" data-end=\"3150\">\u201cThe current plan builds on those recommendations but adapts them to present conditions.
