Retail Investors Struggle to Profit Even as Nifty and Sensex Scale New Highs<\/strong><\/p>\n

India\u2019s benchmark indices may be celebrating fresh highs, but the story inside most retail portfolios looks starkly different. Even as the Nifty<\/strong> and Sensex<\/strong> climb to new records, a majority of retail investors are finding themselves unable to make meaningful returns. Market experts attribute the disconnect to a narrow rally<\/strong>, heavy retail exposure in small-caps and micro-caps<\/strong>, and persistent underperformance across the broader market.<\/p>\n

This contrast between headline index strength and portfolio-level weakness highlights a key reality: the bull market is still narrow and selective<\/strong>, not broad-based.<\/p>\n

Experts Say Record Highs Mask Weakness Beneath the Index<\/strong><\/h2>\n

VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services, says the celebratory mood around new index highs hides serious underlying divergence.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cDespite the market at new highs, the majority of retail investors, particularly newbies who entered after the Covid crash, are holding portfolios showing losses,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Vijayakumar explains that the rally is being driven by only a handful of large-cap stocks<\/strong>, while the rest of the market remains weak. The Nifty Smallcap index is still 9% below its previous peak<\/strong>, dragged down by poor earnings, stretched valuations, and low investor appetite.<\/p>\n

According to him, retail investors\u2019 \u201cobsession with smallcaps<\/strong>\u201d is the core reason many portfolios have failed to capture the new market highs. Without shifting focus toward high-quality large-caps and select mid-caps, he warns that recovery may remain elusive.<\/p>\n
