Persistent selling by foreign investors and a sharp slide in the domestic currency kept overall sentiment fragile through the morning session.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"647\" data-end=\"703\">Sensex Down 332 Points, Nifty Breaks Below 25,950<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"705\" data-end=\"988\">At around 10:20 am, the Sensex fell 332.16 points (0.39%) to 84,806.11, while the Nifty declined 119.50 points (0.46%) to 25,912.70, slipping below the 25,950 mark. This followed three consecutive sessions of weakness, signalling consistent profit booking across sectors.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"990\" data-end=\"1026\">Market breadth also remained weak.<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1027\" data-end=\"1108\">\n<li data-start=\"1027\" data-end=\"1056\">\n<p data-start=\"1029\" data-end=\"1056\">1,145 shares advanced<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1057\" data-end=\"1079\">\n<p data-start=\"1059\" data-end=\"1079\">2,113 declined<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1080\" data-end=\"1108\">\n<p data-start=\"1082\" data-end=\"1108\">160 remained unchanged<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 data-start=\"1115\" data-end=\"1148\">Major Laggards and Gainers<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1150\" data-end=\"1194\">Among the top laggards on the Nifty50:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1195\" data-end=\"1276\">\n<li data-start=\"1195\" data-end=\"1228\">\n<p data-start=\"1197\" data-end=\"1228\">Max Healthcare Institute,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1229\" data-end=\"1257\">\n<p data-start=\"1231\" data-end=\"1257\">Shriram Finance, and<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1258\" data-end=\"1276\">\n<p data-start=\"1260\" data-end=\"1276\">Coal India<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1278\" data-end=\"1305\">\u2014all declined up to 3%.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1307\" data-end=\"1361\">In contrast, IT stocks showed some resilience, with:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1362\" data-end=\"1419\">\n<li data-start=\"1362\" data-end=\"1379\">\n<p data-start=\"1364\" data-end=\"1379\">Wipro and<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1380\" data-end=\"1419\">\n<p data-start=\"1382\" data-end=\"1419\">Tata Consultancy Services (TCS)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1421\" data-end=\"1475\">rising to 2% and emerging as the major gainers.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1421\" data-end=\"1475\"><em><strong>Also Read<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niftytrader.in\/content\/government-psb-mega-merger-fy27\/\">Government Eyes Mega Public Sector Bank Merger by FY27<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"1482\" data-end=\"1525\">Key Factors Behind the Market Decline<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1527\" data-end=\"1600\">Below are the primary triggers weighing down the benchmark indices today:<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1607\" data-end=\"1661\">1) Rupee Hits Fresh All-Time Low Near 90.13\/USD<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1663\" data-end=\"1920\">The biggest factor dragging the market lower was the record decline in the rupee, which opened at 89.96 against the US dollar and then slid to 90.1325, marking its weakest level ever. The currency had ended the previous session at 89.87.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1922\" data-end=\"1958\">The rupee hit this new low due to:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1959\" data-end=\"2100\">\n<li data-start=\"1959\" data-end=\"1989\">\n<p data-start=\"1961\" data-end=\"1989\">Persistent equity outflows<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1990\" data-end=\"2045\">\n<p data-start=\"1992\" data-end=\"2045\">Uncertainty surrounding the India\u2013US trade deal<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2046\" data-end=\"2100\">\n<p data-start=\"2048\" data-end=\"2100\">Repeated delays in timelines that worsened sentiment<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2102\" data-end=\"2329\">Jateen Trivedi, VP Research Analyst &#8211; Commodity and Currency at LKP Securities, noted that the rupee falling below the 90-mark for the first time reflects markets looking for \u201cconcrete numbers rather than broad assurances.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2331\" data-end=\"2460\">He added that the absence of clarity around the trade deal has led to \u201caccelerated selling in the rupee over the past few weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2462\" data-end=\"2722\">Dr V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services, said the currency\u2019s continued depreciation and fear of further weakness has contributed to the \u201cslow drifting down of the market.\u201d This has also pushed FIIs to continue selling.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2729\" data-end=\"2771\">2) Persistent FII Selling Continues<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2773\" data-end=\"2880\">Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) have remained net sellers, intensifying pressure on Indian equities.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2882\" data-end=\"3084\">On Tuesday, FIIs sold \u20b93,642.30 crore worth of shares, marking the fourth consecutive session of outflows. This sustained selling streak has created additional pressure on benchmark indices.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3086\" data-end=\"3245\">Prashanth Tapse, Senior VP (Research) at Mehta Equities, said:<br data-start=\"3152\" data-end=\"3155\" \/>\u201cFII outflows, a record-weak rupee and pressure on banking stocks keep sentiment fragile.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"3252\" data-end=\"3291\">3) Banking Stocks Under Pressure<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3293\" data-end=\"3435\">Banking and financial stocks were among the worst hit in today\u2019s decline, with broad-based selling across both PSU and private-sector lenders.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"3437\" data-end=\"3468\">PSU Banks Extend Losses<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3470\" data-end=\"3643\">PSU banks remained under pressure after the government clarified it has no plans to raise the foreign direct investment (FDI) limit in state-owned banks from 20% to 49%.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3645\" data-end=\"3718\">As a result, the Nifty PSU Bank index was down nearly 2% at 10:10 am.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"3720\" data-end=\"3754\">Private Banks Also Decline<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3756\" data-end=\"3792\">Private lenders also saw weakness:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3793\" data-end=\"3843\">\n<li data-start=\"3793\" data-end=\"3817\">\n<p data-start=\"3795\" data-end=\"3817\">Bandhan Bank and<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3818\" data-end=\"3843\">\n<p data-start=\"3820\" data-end=\"3843\">Kotak Mahindra Bank<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"3845\" data-end=\"3863\">fell up to 1%.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3865\" data-end=\"3952\">The Bank Nifty itself slipped 0.4%, largely due to index rejig adjustments.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3954\" data-end=\"4264\">Vijayakumar added that Nifty\u2019s latest fall of around 300 points from its record high is \u201ctechnically driven,\u201d mainly due to the Bank Nifty rejig and concerns around the rupee.
