India\u2019s currency markets delivered a surprise boost to investors on the back of geopolitical and trade developments, as the Indian rupee strengthened sharply against the US dollar following the conclusion of the India-US trade deal.<\/p>\n
The rupee appreciated to a three-week high of \u20b990.19 per dollar, logging its biggest single-day gain in more than three years and rising over 1% in a single session. The move comes after a prolonged period of weakness driven by tariff pressures and macroeconomic uncertainty.<\/p>\n
Currency traders described the move as a sentiment-driven rally triggered by expectations of smoother trade flows and reduced tariff friction between the two economies.<\/p>\n
The catalyst behind the rally was the announcement that India and the United States concluded a trade deal that lowers US tariffs on Indian exports to 18% from much higher levels imposed earlier.<\/p>\n
The announcement followed a telephonic conversation between US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In a social media post, Trump said the tariff reduction was agreed \u201cout of friendship and respect,\u201d calling Modi a \u201cpowerful and respected leader.\u201d<\/p>\n
The deal effectively signals a thaw in trade tensions that had weighed on currency and equity markets over recent months.<\/p>\n
