{"id":20780,"date":"2026-02-04T16:36:44","date_gmt":"2026-02-04T11:06:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/trending.niftytrader.in\/?p=20780"},"modified":"2026-02-04T16:36:44","modified_gmt":"2026-02-04T11:06:44","slug":"bank-of-america-sees-rupee-strength-limited-rbi-intervention-turning-point-for-the-currency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.niftytrader.in\/markets\/bank-of-america-sees-rupee-strength-limited-rbi-intervention-turning-point-for-the-currency\/","title":{"rendered":"Bank of America Sees Rupee Strength, Limited RBI Intervention \u2014 Turning Point for the Currency?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"471\" data-end=\"560\">Rupee seen gaining further as RBI likely to stay on sidelines after trade-driven rally<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"562\" data-end=\"875\">The Indian rupee may have more room to appreciate in the coming months and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is unlikely to actively intervene in the near term, according to Bank of America, as supportive seasonal trends, foreign portfolio flows and a comfortable reserve position strengthen the currency\u2019s outlook.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"877\" data-end=\"1096\">Vikas Jain, Head of India FICC Trading at Bank of America, said the dynamics in the foreign exchange market have shifted following the US\u2013India trade deal, which has boosted sentiment toward Indian assets and the rupee.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1098\" data-end=\"1294\">\u201cSince the announcement of the trade deal with the US, the dynamics of the currency market have clearly changed. Sentiment-driven demand for the rupee has strengthened,\u201d Jain said in an interview.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"1296\" data-end=\"1355\">Trade deal and seasonal factors reshape rupee trajectory<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1357\" data-end=\"1613\">The rupee has rallied sharply in recent sessions, aided by improving sentiment after the trade agreement with the United States. According to Jain, while the move has been partly sentiment-driven, broader macro factors may continue to support the currency.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1615\" data-end=\"1669\">He highlighted three variables investors are watching:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1671\" data-end=\"1831\">\n<li data-start=\"1671\" data-end=\"1726\">\n<p data-start=\"1673\" data-end=\"1726\">Direction of foreign portfolio investor (FPI) flows<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1727\" data-end=\"1771\">\n<p data-start=\"1729\" data-end=\"1771\">Timing and pace of recent currency moves<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1772\" data-end=\"1831\">\n<p data-start=\"1774\" data-end=\"1831\">RBI\u2019s approach to intervention and reserve accumulation<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1833\" data-end=\"2004\">\u201cWe believe FPIs will reduce their selling and some buying could come in over the next few quarters,\u201d Jain said, adding that exporters may also raise their hedging ratios.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1833\" data-end=\"2004\">Also Read : <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niftytrader.in\/markets\/ai-worries-weigh-on-it-stocks-are-investors-starting-to-reassess-the-sectors-story\/\">AI Worries Weigh on IT Stocks \u2014 Are Investors Starting to Reassess the Sector\u2019s Story?<\/a><\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"2006\" data-end=\"2074\">February\u2013March seasonality and current account seen as supportive<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2076\" data-end=\"2250\">Seasonal patterns are another supportive factor. February and March are typically strong months for the rupee, partly due to corporate flows and balance-of-payments dynamics.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2252\" data-end=\"2416\">\u201cYes, February and March are generally seasonally positive months. We expect the current account to be positive as well, which should support the rupee,\u201d Jain said.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2418\" data-end=\"2553\">A positive current account balance tends to reduce pressure on the currency by improving foreign exchange inflows relative to outflows.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"2555\" data-end=\"2611\">RBI unlikely to aggressively rebuild reserves for now<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2613\" data-end=\"2744\">Despite the rupee\u2019s sharp intraday appreciation earlier this week, Bank of America does not expect the RBI to step in aggressively.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2746\" data-end=\"2870\">India\u2019s forex reserves currently cover roughly eleven months of imports, a level considered comfortable by global standards.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2872\" data-end=\"3114\">\u201cWhile we are at a high level of reserves, we are not expecting the RBI to start accumulating anytime soon,\u201d Jain said. He added that because the rupee has previously depreciated against major currencies, there is still room for appreciation.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"3116\" data-end=\"3162\">RBI\u2019s forward book gives policy flexibility<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3164\" data-end=\"3304\">The RBI\u2019s foreign exchange forward book, often tracked as an indicator of intervention strategy, is largely positioned in longer maturities.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3306\" data-end=\"3324\">According to Jain:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3326\" data-end=\"3493\">\n<li data-start=\"3326\" data-end=\"3377\">\n<p data-start=\"3328\" data-end=\"3377\">Much of the book sits in the three-year segment<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3378\" data-end=\"3433\">\n<p data-start=\"3380\" data-end=\"3433\">Some positions have rolled into two-year maturities<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3434\" data-end=\"3493\">\n<p data-start=\"3436\" data-end=\"3493\">Near-term maturities are limited to the next two months<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"3495\" data-end=\"3608\">This staggered maturity profile gives the RBI flexibility in managing rollovers or allowing contracts to run off.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3610\" data-end=\"3752\">\u201cIn our view, the RBI is likely to roll over those maturities. Overall, I am not too concerned about the forward book at this stage,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"3754\" data-end=\"3807\">Here\u2019s what happened today and why traders reacted<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3809\" data-end=\"3868\">Currency traders reacted to a combination of positive cues.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3870\" data-end=\"3891\">Key drivers included:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3893\" data-end=\"4089\">\n<li data-start=\"3893\" data-end=\"3935\">\n<p data-start=\"3895\" data-end=\"3935\">Optimism after the US\u2013India trade deal<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3936\" data-end=\"3990\">\n<p data-start=\"3938\" data-end=\"3990\">Expectations of FPI inflows into equities and debt<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3991\" data-end=\"4051\">\n<p data-start=\"3993\" data-end=\"4051\">Perception that RBI will not cap rupee gains immediately<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4052\" data-end=\"4089\">\n<p data-start=\"4054\" data-end=\"4089\">Seasonal support for the currency<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"4091\" data-end=\"4218\">When traders believe the central bank is less likely to intervene, it often encourages directional bets in the currency market.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"4220\" data-end=\"4283\">Bond market response remains muted despite currency strength<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"4285\" data-end=\"4376\">While the rupee has strengthened, India\u2019s bond market reaction has been relatively limited.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4378\" data-end=\"4516\">Jain noted that the trade deal does not directly alter bond market fundamentals. Instead, yields have been shaped more by fiscal dynamics.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4518\" data-end=\"4636\">\u201cBond yields are higher mainly because the market was surprised by the gross borrowing number in the Budget,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4638\" data-end=\"4823\">Post-Budget, yields rose several basis points, with only a partial retracement since. The 10-year government bond yield is around 6.72%, carrying a sizable premium over the policy rate.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"4825\" data-end=\"4879\">Liquidity surplus reduces need for RBI intervention<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"4881\" data-end=\"4979\">Banking system liquidity remains in surplus, which reduces the need for aggressive RBI operations.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4981\" data-end=\"4994\">Jain expects:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"4996\" data-end=\"5193\">\n<li data-start=\"4996\" data-end=\"5070\">\n<p data-start=\"4998\" data-end=\"5070\">Surplus liquidity to reach around \u20b93 lakh crore by the end of the week<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"5071\" data-end=\"5117\">\n<p data-start=\"5073\" data-end=\"5117\">Continued support from government spending<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"5118\" data-end=\"5193\">\n<p data-start=\"5120\" data-end=\"5193\">Surplus liquidity around 1.5% of net demand and time liabilities (NDTL)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"5195\" data-end=\"5326\">\u201cIf liquidity is required, RBI will provide it. On liquidity, RBI will commit as much as the system requires,\u201d Jain said.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6344\" data-end=\"6602\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">For now, the combination of seasonal strength, supportive flows and a non-interventionist RBI stance has tilted near-term sentiment in favour of the rupee.
