Indian equity markets witnessed sharp swings on Thursday as benchmark indices moved between gains and losses before ending almost flat.<\/p>\n

The Sensex closed down 114 points at 77,844.52, while the Nifty slipped 4.30 points to settle at 24,326.65.<\/p>\n

Markets initially gained after crude oil prices declined sharply, easing concerns around inflation and the Middle East conflict. However, profit booking at higher levels and continued foreign fund outflows limited the upside.<\/p>\n

The previous session\u2019s strong rally also encouraged traders to lock in profits.<\/p>\n

Markets opened strong after reports suggested easing tensions around the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n

Lower crude oil prices improved global sentiment because falling oil is positive for economies like India that depend heavily on imports.<\/p>\n

    Auto and defence stocks continued to attract buyers<\/h2>\n

    Despite volatility in benchmark indices, buying interest remained strong in selective sectors.<\/p>\n

    Auto stocks led the rally after strong quarterly earnings from major companies boosted sentiment.<\/p>\n

    Bajaj Auto climbed nearly 3 percent after reporting better-than-expected Q4 earnings. Mahindra & Mahindra gained around 2 percent, extending its three-session rally to 8.5 percent.<\/p>\n

    The Nifty Auto index ended nearly 1.9 percent higher.<\/p>\n

    Buying was also visible in defence, healthcare, media and metal counters.<\/p>\n

      Hindustan Unilever, TCS, Titan Company and ITC were among the major laggards.<\/p>\n

      Meanwhile, Godrej Consumer Products fell nearly 5 percent despite posting higher quarterly profit after brokerages raised concerns over margins and rising input costs.<\/p>\n

          FIIs sold equities worth Rs 5,834.90 crore on Wednesday, continuing pressure on domestic equities.<\/p>\n

          Derivatives indicators also pointed toward caution.<\/p>\n

          Aggressive call writing at higher strike levels suggested limited near-term upside, while elevated India VIX levels reflected uncertainty among traders.<\/p>\n

          Although India VIX later eased to 16.62, volatility remained high due to weekly Sensex expiry.<\/p>\n

          \u201cProfit booking at higher levels cannot be ruled out as markets approach resistance zones,\u201d said Hitesh Tailor of Choice Equity Broking.<\/p>\n

          Rupee strengthens as crude oil prices cool<\/h2>\n

          The Indian rupee closed stronger despite volatility in equities.<\/p>\n

          The currency ended 36 paise higher at 94.25 per dollar against the previous close of 94.61.<\/p>\n
