The Indian rupee hit 96.28 against the US dollar on May 18, a record level driven by persistent FII outflows. A weak rupee lifts inflation expectations and pressures rate-sensitive stocks. PSU banks carry larger fixed-rate loan books and heavier government securities portfolios than private peers, making them structurally more exposed to currency-driven rate pressure. ICICI Bank and Kotak, with shorter asset durations and stronger fee income, are relatively insulated.

Bond yield mark-to-market losses. The 10-year G-sec yield rose to a 12-month high of 6.96%, up approximately 28 basis points, per Business Standard. Most PSU banks built their bond books at yields of 6.30%–6.70%. Every basis point rise above that is a direct MTM loss sitting in investment portfolios. SBI’s Q4FY26 results confirmed the scale of damage, investment revaluation swung from a gain of ₹6,879 crore in Q4FY25 to a loss of ₹1,471 crore in Q4FY26, per Tickertape. That ₹8,350 crore swing is sitting across every PSU bank’s book right now.

FII selling concentrated in PSU financials. FIIs held 32.4% of their total Indian equity assets in BFSI as of February 2026, the highest sectoral concentration of any sector, per Business Standard. With FIIs net sellers of ₹2.2 lakh crore in Indian equities year-to-date, PSU banks absorb a disproportionate share of every exit wave. Monday’s price action confirms it, PSU names down 2–2.5%, private names up across the board.

The ECL Factor — Least Discussed, Most Durable

The RBI issued final guidelines on April 28, 2026 for transitioning to an Expected Credit Loss provisioning framework, effective April 1, 2027, per Business Standard. Under ECL, banks must provision against expected future loan losses, not just current NPAs. PSU banks with larger legacy loan books face meaningfully higher provisioning requirements through FY27–28.

Oddly, SBI’s underlying FY26 numbers were actually strong. Full-year net profit rose 7.4% to ₹83,299 crore. Gross advances grew 16.87% YoY to ₹49.3 lakh crore. Dividend declared at ₹17.35 per share, per Screener.
