The Ramco Cements Limited or RAMCOCEM

The Ramco Cements was earlier known by the name Madras Cements (MCL) which was established in 1957, a part of Ramco Group, and a well-known business group of South India. It is based in Chennai and is the fifth largest cement producer in the country. It has also become the most popular cement brand in South India with its headquartered located in Chennai. And the main product of the Company is Portland cement, which is manufactured in eight states of the art production facilities that include Integrated Cement plants and Grinding units and having a total production capacity of approximately 15.5 MTPA. The first plant of MCL was situated at the Ramasamy Raja Nagar, near Virudhunagar in Tamil Nadu where it commenced its production in 1962 with a capacity of 200 tones, using a wet process. In the '70s, the plant switched over to the more efficient dry process. Then, the second kiln was also added to bring the total capacity to 12 lakh ton per annum. The second venture of MCL is the Jayanthipuram plant near Vijayawada in A.P., which was set up in 1987. Currently, 16 lakh ton per annum plant employs the latest state of the art technology. Soon in 1999, MCL commissioned the most sophisticated Ready Mix Concrete Plant in Medavakkam in the South Chennai. Later, in 2002, a state–of–art Dry Mortar plant was appointed near Sriperumpudur, Tamil Nadu with a purpose to manufactures dry mortar, and cement based putty and tile fix compound. In 2000, MCL acquired Gokul Cements which was situated in Mathod in Karnataka and had a capacity of 600 TPD. Being an eco–friendly company, MCL set up the Ramco Windfarm in 1993 at Muppandal TN. It was followed by wind farms in Poolavadi near Coimbatore in 1995 & Oothumalai in 2005. And the combined capacity of these two put together would be about 45 M.W. Also, the third venture of MCL is at Alathiyur in T.N. set up in 1997 and expanded by the addition of another line in 2001. The 30 lac ton p. a. The plant is one of the most modern plants in the country. So today, the Company is among the sixth largest producer of cement in India and is also the largest wind energy producer in India with the capacity of approximately 185.59 MW.

The Different Business areas:

The primary & most essential product of the Company is Portland Cement, which is manufactured via the five advanced production facilities spread across South India and has a capacity of about 10.49 million tons p. a. This Company also produces Ready Mix Concrete and Dry Mortar products. Besides, it also operates on one of the largest wind farms in India.

  1. The MCL won National Award for Energy Conservation from the Confederation of Indian Industries.
  2. It was awarded as the Best Energy Efficient Unit from National Council for Cement and Building Materials.
  3. Madras Cement received the Corporate Performance Award from Economic Times.
  4. The Analyst Award honored it from International Congress on Chemistry of Cement.
