On May 24, 1988, SJVN was being incorporated under the Indian Companies Act, 1956, and as amended (as per the Companies Act) as a private limited company with the brand name of Nathpa Jhakri Power Corporation Private Limited and with the Registrar of Companies, Punjab, Chandigarh, and Himachal Pradesh. It is into hydroelectric power generation initially established as a joint venture among the government and the state government of Himachal Pradesh for developing and operating the Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station (or NJHPS). Also, based on the information published by the CEA, the NJHPS is presently, the largest operation offering hydroelectric power generation facility in India based on the installed capacity, with an aggregate generation capacity of about 1,500 MW and is located on the Sutlej River in the state of Himachal Pradesh. Currently, NJHPS is the only hydroelectric power project in operation. Also, via the construction and operation of the NJHPS, it gained experience in the design, construction, development, and operation of hydroelectric projects, and even the execution and management of all aspects of such projects since the initial stages of concept to operation, commissioning, and maintenance of such projects. It is currently constructing the Rampur Project that is expected to be a 412 MW hydroelectric power generation facility and is located downstream from the NJHPS. It is now projected to be completed and commissioned in the year 2013. Also, it has been awarded the rights of developing and operating the two hydroelectric projects with an expected aggregate generation capacity of about 825 MW by the state government of Himachal Pradesh (and in each of which it is expected to have a 51% participation interest). The Company also entered into the memoranda of understanding with the state government of Uttarakhand for about three hydroelectric projects with an expected aggregate generation capacity of approximately 363 MW. Also, further it agreed to participate in a joint venture, along with NHPC Limited and the state government of Manipur for both the development and operation of about 1,500 MW hydroelectric power projects that is located in Manipur. The Company has diversified the operations for targeting hydroelectric power projects that are available outside India, and is also awarded the rights to construct and operate on a own, build, operate and transfer (as per BOOT) basis, which is a 900 MW hydroelectric power project that is to be located in the Sankhuwasabha district, in Nepal, via participating in a competitive tender that was held by the Nepalese government.
