In a major move towards clean energy in remote regions, Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) will supply liquefied natural gas (LNG) for a new 50 MW gas-based power plant to be set up by NTPC in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
The project marks a big step in shifting from diesel to cleaner fuel sources for power generation in the region.
According to official sources, NTPC is currently in the process of acquiring land for this ambitious project. The plant is scheduled to be commissioned by 2027–28, providing a reliable and more sustainable source of electricity for the island territory.
Indian Oil confirmed that it is working closely with stakeholders to develop the necessary LNG infrastructure in both South Andaman and Great Nicobar.
“Indian Oil is well-positioned to support this clean energy initiative given its strong presence in the region,” an IOC official stated.
The new power plant will play a critical role in replacing diesel-based power generation on the main island. However, IOC will continue to meet diesel (HSD) demand in other parts of the islands during this transition.
The NTPC project is aligned with India’s broader clean energy mission, especially in strategically important and environmentally sensitive zones like Andaman & Nicobar.
Replacing diesel with LNG will significantly reduce emissions and operational costs in the long term.
With NTPC taking the lead on execution and Indian Oil ensuring fuel supply, the collaboration signals strong inter-agency coordination for clean energy projects in remote regions.
Conclusion:
The partnership between NTPC and Indian Oil is expected to pave the way for sustainable energy development in India’s far-flung island territories. With commissioning targeted by 2027–28, this project could become a model for future clean fuel-based infrastructure in isolated geographies.
