Srinagar Blast: 9 Killed, 27 Injured in Nowgam Police Station Explosion

A powerful accidental explosion tore through the Nowgam Police Station in Srinagar late Friday night, killing nine people and injuring 27 others, the Jammu and Kashmir police confirmed on Saturday.
The blast occurred around 11:20 pm while officials were handling seized explosive material.

Explosion During Sampling of Explosives

Authorities stated that the blast happened as police personnel, forensic teams, and civil officials were extracting samples from a large cache of explosives linked to a “white-collar” terror module.
These explosives were connected to the November 10 Delhi Red Fort car blast.

Most of those killed were policemen and forensic experts working inside the police station.
Among the injured were three civilians, who were shifted to various hospitals in Srinagar, including 92 Base Hospital and SKIMS.

360 kg of Explosive Material Triggered the Accident

The explosion ripped through the police station building and destroyed several vehicles on the premises.
The blast occurred while officials were handling 360 kilograms of explosive material brought from Faridabad, Haryana.

This stock was part of a much larger recovery—nearly 3,000 kg of explosives, including ammonium nitrate, potassium nitrate, and sulfur. The material was seized last week from the homes of arrested doctors Dr Muzammil Ganaie and Dr Shaheen Sayeed of Al Falah University.

“White-Collar” Terror Module Under Probe

Investigators described the network as a “white-collar” terror module run by radicalised professionals, including medical practitioners.
According to agencies, the module handled fundraising, logistics, and procurement of explosives for attacks.

The core trio identified includes:

  • Dr Muzammil Ganaie – arrested

  • Umar Nabi – driver of the car used in the Red Fort blast

  • Muzzaffar Rather – absconding

Another member, Dr Adeel Rather, was arrested with an AK-56 rifle, while the role of absconding accused Muzzaffar Rather remains under investigation.

How the Module Was Traced

The case began unfolding after pro-Jaish-e-Mohammed posters surfaced in Bunpora, Nowgam in mid-October, threatening security forces.
Initial arrests included:

  • Arif Nisar Dar alias Sahil

  • Yasir-ul-Ashraf

  • Maqsood Ahmad Dar alias Shahid

These individuals were previously involved in stone-throwing cases and were seen pasting the posters. Their interrogation led to the discovery of the larger module and the massive cache of explosives.

Multiple Blasts Delayed Rescue

Police said the Nowgam explosion was accidental, occurring during sampling and forensic examination of the explosives.
Small successive blasts slowed down immediate rescue efforts.

Reactions and Ongoing Investigation

Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta expressed grief on X, saying he was “deeply anguished” and offered condolences to the families of the deceased.

Deputy Commissioner Srinagar Akshay Labroo visited the injured in hospitals.

Senior officers from the Special Investigation Agency (SIA) and forensic units cordoned off the area.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has now taken over the probe into the explosion and the terror module.
