Trump Accuses New York Times of ‘Fake News’ Over China Talks

Former U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday accused The New York Times of spreading “fake news” about his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, claiming the encounter was a “Big Victory for the U.S.A.”

Trump criticized the publication and its reporters, Lily Kuo and David Pierson, alleging that they distorted the facts surrounding what he described as a “very successful” meeting held on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Busan, South Korea.

Trump Calls Meeting a ‘Spectacular Success’

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the Times “did everything possible to make my very successful meeting with President Xi look as bad as possible,” describing it instead as a “spectacular SUCCESS.”

He claimed that the talks led China to:

  • Withdraw its rare earth export threat,

  • Purchase billions of dollars’ worth of soybeans and other agricultural products, and

  • Agree to pay substantial tariffs to the United States.

“President Xi, a friend of mine, did the right thing for his country, but I did the right thing for mine,” Trump wrote. He called the outcome a “Big Victory for the U.S.A. and, indeed, the World.”

Praise for U.S.-China Relations

Trump emphasized what he called an “excellent relationship” between Washington and Beijing following the meeting. He said both sides had outlined specific plans for future talks and meetings, suggesting that dialogue between the two nations would continue.

Criticizing The New York Times, he added, “For The Failing New York Times to be trying to spin this Great Event negatively, when it was the exact opposite, is a disgrace to Journalism. No wonder they are doing so badly — THEY ARE, AFTER ALL, THE FAKE NEWS!”

Remarks on Rare Earths and Xi’s Delegation

Speaking at a breakfast session with senators on Wednesday, Trump shared further details about the meeting, including how the rare earths issue, previously seen as a major global concern, was resolved swiftly.

“Two months ago, it looked like the whole world was in trouble over rare earths, and that’s no longer a subject for people. It was all worked out very quickly. Without tariffs, I couldn’t have done it,” Trump said.

He described Xi Jinping as a “tough man” and a “smart man,” adding that the Chinese officials accompanying Xi appeared visibly tense during the talks.

“I’ve never seen men so scared in their lives,” he remarked.

Continued Clash with the Media

Trump’s comments represent his latest attack on mainstream U.S. media outlets, continuing a long-running feud over their coverage of his administration and policies.

The former president reiterated his position that The New York Times had deliberately misrepresented his diplomatic achievements with China.
