Quick Take
- Net profit: ₹4,856 crore, up 2.2% YoY, up 7.8% QoQ, NII grew a stronger 13% to ₹10,216 crore.
- Asset quality: Gross NPA down to 1.57% (from 2.69%), net NPA to 0.36% (from 0.63%), genuine improvement.
- Correction flag: The “₹1,399 crore” figure circulating as “total NPAs” is actually NPA-specific provisions, not the bank’s outstanding bad-loan stock (which is ₹20,354 crore gross).
- Stock: Up ~3% intraday to ₹129.64, but still down ~17% year-to-date.
- Brokerages split: UBS Buy (target ₹160) vs Morgan Stanley Underweight (target ₹103).
Profit Growth Slows to Single Digits, Even as NII Jumps 13%
The state-owned lender’s standalone net profit rose 2.2% year-on-year to ₹4,855.82 crore for the quarter ended June 2026, up from ₹4,752.03 crore a year earlier, and 7.8% higher than the ₹4,505.57 crore posted in the preceding March quarter.
Net interest income grew a healthier 13% YoY to ₹10,216 crore. Total income rose 4.3% to ₹39,684 crore, while operating profit was nearly flat, up under 1% YoY at ₹8,636 crore, as a decline in other income partly offset gains in core lending income.

Asset Quality Improved — But One Widely Shared Number Needs Correcting
Gross NPA ratio fell to 1.57% from 2.69% a year ago, and net NPA to 0.36% from 0.63%, a genuine, sizeable improvement. In absolute terms, gross NPAs stood at ₹20,354 crore and net NPAs at ₹4,653 crore as of June 2026.
Separately, provisions specifically for bad loans declined 24% YoY to ₹1,399 crore from ₹1,845 crore, with the provision coverage ratio improving to 94.76% from 93.17%.
That ₹1,399 crore figure is the NPA-provisioning number, not the bank’s outstanding NPA stock, worth flagging since it’s circulating under a “total NPAs” label. Total provisions and contingencies, a broader figure, eased a smaller 0.6% YoY to ₹3,780 crore.

Advances Keep Outpacing Deposits
Global business grew 14.4% YoY to roughly ₹29.06 lakh crore. Global advances rose 18% to ₹12.93 lakh crore, comfortably ahead of an 11.6% rise in global deposits to ₹16.13 lakh crore, a gap analysts have flagged in recent quarters as a margin-side risk if funding costs stay elevated.
Domestic advances grew 17% to ₹12.07 lakh crore, RAM (retail, agriculture and MSME) credit rose 21.2% to ₹7.65 lakh crore, and the retail loan book alone grew nearly 36% to ₹3.20 lakh crore, with housing loans up 17.9% to ₹1.29 lakh crore.

Margins Are Under Quiet Pressure Despite the Profit Beat
Look past the headline profit number and the margin picture is less clean: net profit margin slipped to 12.24% from 12.48% a year ago, operating margin eased to 21.76% from 22.47%, and return on assets (annualised) declined to 1.04% from 1.14%, meaning the balance sheet is growing faster than profitability is. Capital adequacy remains comfortable at 17.17%, up from 16.52% YoY.
Branch Network and Reach
As of June 30, Canara Bank operated 10,131 branches, 3,211 rural, 3,033 semi-urban, 1,994 urban and 1,893 metropolitan, along with 11,047 ATMs and cash recyclers, and four overseas branches in London, New York, Dubai and GIFT City. The results mark one of the first full quarterly reports under new MD & CEO Brajesh Kumar Singh.

Brokerages Were Already Split Before Today’s Numbers
Following the bank’s provisional June-quarter business update in early July, UBS retained a “Buy” rating with a ₹160 target, citing loan growth ahead of its estimates, while Morgan Stanley kept an “Underweight” stance with a ₹103 target despite acknowledging the strong credit growth. Both flagged margins, credit costs and slippages as the numbers to watch once detailed results landed, largely what today’s print delivers.

Stock Reaction: Up Today, Still Down Sharply for the Year
Canara Bank shares gained around 3% intraday to touch ₹129.64 on the BSE, up from Friday’s close of ₹125.65, as the market welcomed the asset-quality improvement. Even so, the stock remains down roughly 17% year-to-date, a reminder that one good quarter hasn’t yet reversed the broader de-rating public-sector bank stocks have seen through 2026.
NiftyTrader Desk View (Editorial — not investment advice)
| Factor | Desk Take |
|---|---|
| Profit +2% vs NII +13% | Core lending income is doing the heavy lifting; other income and opex are the drag |
| ROA slipping to 1.04% from 1.14% | Balance sheet is growing faster than profitability — worth tracking next 2 quarters |
| Brokerage split (Buy vs Underweight) | Reflects a genuine valuation debate, not a consensus call |
| Stock down ~17% YTD despite improving fundamentals | May reflect sector-wide PSU bank de-rating rather than company-specific issues |
Canara Bank Q1 FY27 at a Glance
| Factor | Update |

| Market Reaction | Shares gained around 3% after results |
The Bottom Line
Canara Bank’s Q1 FY27 print is genuinely a good quarter on asset quality and business growth — the NPA improvement is real, and RAM/retail credit growth is running well ahead of the overall loan book. The softer spots are margin compression and a widening advances-deposits growth gap, which is exactly what UBS and Morgan Stanley were watching for even before today’s release. For investors, the split brokerage views matter more than the headline 2% profit growth: this is a stock where the bull and bear cases use the same numbers and reach different conclusions on valuation.
