NiftyTrader’s OI Spurts dashboard, updated at 4:08 PM IST, showed 155 long-buildup signals against 51 short-buildup signals across 217 displayed instruments.
Tata Power emerged as a prominent bearish standout. Its share price fell 2.76% to ₹338.50, while aggregate futures open interest (OI) surged 63.08%. On the bullish side, Infosys, Coal India, GAIL, BPCL and Varun Beverages recorded higher prices alongside rising aggregate OI.
With the October 27 monthly derivatives expiry just one session away, another distinction matters: October Nifty futures showed short covering, while November and December contracts registered long buildup.
The broader picture therefore points to more long-buildup signals than short-buildup signals, but with significant stock-specific selling pressure and rollover activity complicating the interpretation.
Need to Know
-
155 long-buildup signals: Approximately 71.4% of the 217 instruments displayed on NiftyTrader’s scanner.
-
51 short-buildup signals: Approximately 23.5% of the displayed instruments.
-
Tata Power: OI rose 63.08% while its price declined 2.76%, making it a key bearish name to monitor.
-
Nifty futures: October showed short covering; November and December showed long buildup ahead of expiry.

F&O Buildup Today: Long Signals Outnumber Shorts
NiftyTrader’s post-market scanner showed a clear numerical tilt towards long-buildup signals.
Distribution of the 217 displayed instrument records on NiftyTrader’s OI Spurts dashboard at 4:08 PM IST.
Source: NiftyTrader OI Spurts, 4:08 PM IST. Other signals comprise one short-covering, one long-unwinding and nine neutral readings. These are instrument-level classifications, not counts of distinct companies.
The 155-to-51 split shows that rising prices accompanied by rising OI were more common than falling prices accompanied by rising OI in the displayed universe.
However, this is not the same as saying 71.4% of all NSE-listed F&O stocks are bullish. The scanner’s 217 records include instrument-level entries, and each buildup category reflects a price-and-OI relationship rather than a forecast.
Top F&O Long Buildup Stocks Today
Long buildup is generally identified when a stock’s price and outstanding futures positions increase together. It can indicate fresh bullish positioning, although traders must also examine individual contract expiries.
The following stocks appeared among the notable long-buildup names on NiftyTrader’s October 26 snapshot.
| Stock | Price | Price Change | Aggregate OI Change | OI Change |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Infosys | ₹1,166.00 | +1.06% | +4,89,53,600 | +59.17% |
| Coal India | ₹405.00 | +1.90% | +4,51,73,700 | +52.13% |
| GAIL | ₹168.28 | +2.63% | +3,42,32,650 | +37.29% |
| BPCL | ₹290.40 | +3.00% | +1,58,86,900 | +34.64% |
| Varun Beverages | ₹408.00 | +3.27% | +2,13,58,800 | +30.49% |

Infosys and Coal India Lead Selected Long-Buildup Names
Infosys recorded the largest absolute OI increase among these five stocks. Its aggregate OI increased by 4,89,53,600, representing a 59.17% rise, while the share price gained 1.06%.
The October Infosys futures contract also showed OI increasing 13.31%. November futures recorded a substantially larger 184.74% OI increase.
Coal India displayed a similar direction across expiries. Its aggregate OI rose 52.13% as the share price advanced 1.90%. October futures OI increased 27.93%, while November futures OI climbed 82.13%.
These readings support the long-buildup classification, but the particularly large increases in November OI must also be viewed in the context of positions shifting into the next series.
GAIL, BPCL and Varun Beverages Also Show Rising OI
GAIL gained 2.63%, accompanied by a 37.29% increase in aggregate OI. BPCL rose 3.00%, with OI climbing 34.64%.
Varun Beverages advanced 3.27% and showed a 30.49% rise in aggregate OI.
However, Varun Beverages presents an important expiry-related difference: its overall scanner classification was long buildup, but the October futures contract itself showed short covering.
That distinction becomes important when evaluating whether an apparent buildup is occurring in the expiring contract or in later-month futures.
Top F&O Short Buildup Stocks Today
Short buildup is generally identified when a stock’s price declines while outstanding futures positions increase.
Despite the larger number of long-buildup signals, several stocks showed substantial bearish positioning.
| Stock | Price | Price Change | Aggregate OI Change | OI Change |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tata Power | ₹338.50 | −2.76% | +4,07,46,450 | +63.08% |
| Shriram Finance | ₹825.00 | −4.62% | +1,04,72,550 | +34.62% |
| Bank of India | ₹126.32 | −3.57% | +1,83,82,000 | +29.88% |
| Ujjivan Small Finance Bank | ₹55.00 | −5.34% | +1,41,44,000 | +27.17% |

Tata Power OI Jumps 63% as Shares Fall
Tata Power was the strongest bearish standout among the selected stocks.
Its price declined ₹9.60, or 2.76%, to ₹338.50. At the same time, aggregate OI increased by 4,07,46,450, equivalent to 63.08%.
The contract-level figures reinforced that signal:
-
October futures: OI rose 38.04% as the futures price declined.
-
November futures: OI increased 93.87% alongside falling prices.
-
December futures: OI rose 48.37%, also accompanied by a price decline.
Unlike some other scanner classifications, Tata Power’s short-buildup pattern was visible across all three displayed futures expiries.
That makes it a notable stock for monitoring on October 27, although rising OI does not guarantee another decline.
Shriram Finance and Banking Stocks Show Selling Pressure
Shriram Finance declined 4.62% to ₹825, with aggregate OI rising 34.62%. Its October and November futures both showed short-buildup patterns.
Ujjivan Small Finance Bank recorded the steepest price decline among the four selected bearish names, falling 5.34% while aggregate OI climbed 27.17%.
Bank of India lost 3.57%, accompanied by a 29.88% increase in aggregate OI.
As with Varun Beverages, however, Bank of India’s aggregate buildup classification requires closer examination of the individual futures contracts.
The Expiry Twist: Why Aggregate OI Can Tell a Different Story
One of the most important findings in the October 26 data is the difference between aggregate scanner signals and individual futures-expiry signals.
Two stocks illustrate the point particularly clearly.
| Stock | Aggregate OI Change | October OI Change | November OI Change | October Signal |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Varun Beverages | +30.49% | −0.53% | +57.69% | Short covering |
| Bank of India | +29.88% | −1.27% | +52.51% | Long unwinding |

October vs November futures OI changes
The two stocks have positive aggregate OI changes but falling OI in the expiring October contract. Percentages use each contract’s own prior OI as the base.
■ October OI change
■ November OI change
What Does This Mean?
For Varun Beverages, the October futures price increased while OI declined 0.53%. That is consistent with short covering in the expiring contract.
In November futures, both price and OI increased, producing a long-buildup signal.
Bank of India showed the opposite price direction. Its October futures price fell while OI declined 1.27%, indicating long unwinding. November futures, however, showed falling prices alongside a 52.51% increase in OI, consistent with short buildup.
The key takeaway: A stock may display positive aggregate OI growth while the expiring contract is losing outstanding positions.
This is especially relevant immediately before monthly expiry, when traders may close or transfer exposure into later contracts.
Nifty Futures: October Short Covering, November Long Buildup
Nifty’s futures positioning added another layer to the October 26 market picture.
According to NiftyTrader’s Nifty Futures dashboard, updated at 4:00 PM IST, Nifty spot stood at 22,753.20.
The October futures contract traded at 22,774.80, a premium of 21.60 points over spot.
| Nifty Futures Contract | Expiry | Futures Price | Price Change | OI Change | Signal |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Near month | 27 Oct 2026 | 22,774.80 | +0.88% | −0.89% | Short covering |
| Next month | 23 Nov 2026 | 22,889.80 | +1.01% | +43.36% | Long buildup |
| Far month | 29 Dec 2026 | 23,047.10 | +1.09% | +21.23% | Long buildup |
Source: NiftyTrader Nifty Futures, October 26, 2026, 4:00 PM IST.
November futures, meanwhile, advanced 1.01% with OI rising 43.36%. December futures gained 1.09% alongside a 21.23% increase in OI.
NiftyTrader also displayed a 54.22% rollover reading and a 0.50% rollover-cost indicator.
The figures suggest that positioning in the later-month contracts was expanding while outstanding positions in October were contracting.
However, the sharp OI increase in November cannot be treated entirely as fresh directional conviction. Part of the increase may reflect exposure shifting out of the expiring October contract.
What F&O Traders Should Watch on October 27 Expiry
Tuesday’s expiry session will test whether the October 26 positioning patterns remain intact.
| What to Monitor | October 26 Signal | What Could Change the Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Long-buildup stocks | Infosys, Coal India, GAIL and BPCL show positive price-OI combinations | Price weakness or OI unwinding |
| Tata Power | Price −2.76%, aggregate OI +63.08% | Price recovery accompanied by short covering |
| Shriram Finance | Price −4.62%, aggregate OI +34.62% | A reversal in price and OI behaviour |
| Nifty October futures | Short covering | Fresh OI expansion or further expiry-related unwinding |
| November futures | Positive price change with rising OI | Changes after the October rollover is completed |
Three questions will be particularly important.
1. Can the long-buildup stocks hold their gains?
Infosys and Coal India showed positive price-OI combinations in both the scanner and the October futures contracts. Further price strength accompanied by sustained OI would support that reading.
2. Will Tata Power’s bearish buildup persist?
Tata Power’s unusually large OI increase makes it important to monitor. If prices recover while OI declines, that would suggest positions are being closed rather than fresh bearish exposure being added.
3. Will November’s OI growth survive the rollover?
The October 27 expiry could produce further large changes in OI across contract months. The more meaningful test will come from subsequent price and OI readings once the expiring series has closed.
None of these conditions independently establishes a trade entry or exit.
Bottom Line
NiftyTrader’s October 26 snapshot showed 155 long-buildup signals versus 51 short-buildup signals, indicating broader participation in rising price-and-OI combinations across its displayed instrument universe.
Yet the individual-stock picture was mixed.
Infosys and Coal India recorded substantial OI increases alongside rising prices, while Tata Power’s 63.08% OI surge during a 2.76% price decline stood out on the bearish side.
The most important expiry-related finding was the distinction between aggregate OI and individual contracts. Varun Beverages and Bank of India both showed rising aggregate OI even as their October futures OI declined.
Nifty futures displayed a similar rollover-sensitive split: short covering in October against long buildup in November and December.
As the market approaches October 27 expiry, traders will need to monitor fresh price action, contract-specific OI changes and rollover activity together. The direction of OI change matters—but so does the contract in which it occurs.
Data note: Stock buildup figures come from NiftyTrader’s OI Spurts snapshot at 4:08 PM IST on October 26, 2026. Futures contract figures are from NiftyTrader dashboards updated at 4:00 PM IST. They have not been independently reconciled against NSE’s final end-of-day derivatives files.
