NiftyTrader’s October 27 F&O snapshot showed 113 long-buildup signals and 66 short-buildup signals across 217 tracked symbols. The bullish category remained larger, but the gap narrowed from the previous session. Meanwhile, Nifty’s November futures shifted from long buildup on October 26 to short buildup on October 27, with prices falling 0.36% as open interest (OI) increased 27.37%.
The contrast is the key development in today’s derivatives market. While several individual stocks continued to show rising prices alongside higher OI, the next-month Nifty contract displayed the opposite combination. However, with the October monthly series expiring, rollover activity remains an important factor in interpreting the change.
Need to Know
- Long buildup: 113 symbols, down from 155 on October 26.
- Short buildup: 66 symbols, up from 51 in the previous session.
- November Nifty futures: Price down 0.36%, with OI up 27.37%.
- Stock-level signals: Bank of Maharashtra, Bharti Airtel and PG Electroplast showed long buildup; NALCO and GMR Airports showed short buildup.
- Expiry caveat: NiftyTrader reported a 72.17% rollover indicator, so the increase in next-month OI should not automatically be interpreted as entirely fresh bearish positions.

F&O Buildup Today: Bullish Signals Decline, Bearish Signals Increase
NiftyTrader’s latest OI Spurts snapshot classified 217 symbols into 113 long-buildup, 66 short-buildup, 17 short-covering, six long-unwinding and 15 neutral signals.
The change from October 26 was notable. Long-buildup classifications declined by 42, from 155 to 113, while short-buildup classifications increased by 15, from 51 to 66.
This shift points to a change in the distribution of price-and-OI signals across tracked stocks. It does not, by itself, establish a corresponding change in market-wide capital flows or identify the traders behind individual positions.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bank of Maharashtra | 80.00 | +5.10% | +10.07% | Long buildup |
| Bharti Airtel | 1,978.80 | +3.20% | +11.50% | Long buildup |
| PG Electroplast | 500.55 | +5.38% | +13.94% | Long buildup |
| Tata Steel | 171.42 | +0.87% | +8.98% | Long buildup |

Source: NiftyTrader OI Spurts dashboard, updated 4:08 PM IST on October 27, 2026. Prices, aggregate futures OI changes and buildup classifications are from the displayed dashboard.
Bank of Maharashtra and Bharti Airtel featured in the long-buildup category, with their displayed prices and OI rising together. PG Electroplast recorded a 5.38% price increase alongside a 13.94% rise in OI, while Tata Steel showed a more modest price gain of 0.87%.
NALCO presented the opposite pattern. Its price declined 1.34% while OI increased 18.63%, consistent with short buildup. GMR Airports also showed falling prices alongside rising OI.
These are derivatives classifications, not standalone trading recommendations. A price increase accompanied by falling OI can indicate short covering rather than fresh long buildup, while falling prices and rising OI are consistent with short buildup.
Nifty Futures: November Contract Shifts from Long to Short Buildup
Nifty’s next-month futures contract showed the clearest change in positioning between the two sessions.
On October 26, November Nifty futures rose 1.01%, while OI increased 43.36%, producing a long-buildup classification. On October 27, the same contract fell 0.36% as OI increased 27.37%, resulting in a short-buildup classification.
The shift marks a change in the price-and-OI pattern, although expiry-related rollover activity prevents it from being treated as conclusive evidence of fresh bearish bets.

November futures declined ₹81.90 from the previous session’s displayed price of ₹22,889.80 to ₹22,807.90, while the dashboard reported an OI increase of 33,51,660, equivalent to 27.37%.
The absolute OI change is reproduced in the dashboard’s reported units; it is not described here as a number of individual futures contracts.
December futures also showed a bearish price-and-OI combination, with the price down 0.38% and OI up 20.15%.
The expiring October contract behaved differently. Its price declined 0.08% while OI fell 21.02%, consistent with long unwinding under the conventional classification framework. On expiry day, however, declining OI can also reflect the closure or transfer of existing positions.
Why the 72.17% Rollover Indicator Matters
NiftyTrader reported a rollover indicator of 72.17% and a rollover cost of 0.26%, or ₹59.60, in its October 27 futures snapshot.
Rollover occurs when traders move exposure from an expiring contract into a later expiry. Consequently, OI can decline in the near-month contract while increasing in November futures, even when some of the change reflects the transfer of existing exposure rather than entirely new positions.
The November contract’s falling price and rising OI support the short-buildup classification. Determining how much of the increase represents fresh bearish positioning would require additional contract-level analysis.
Bank of Maharashtra: Earnings Support the Stock-Level Signal
Bank of Maharashtra appeared among the long-buildup stocks, with its displayed price at ₹80.00, up 5.10%, and OI up 10.07% in NiftyTrader’s 4:08 PM snapshot.
The bank announced its Q2 FY27 results on October 26. Its official results release reported standalone net profit of ₹2,309.59 crore, up 41.42% year on year. Net interest income increased 21.76% to ₹3,954 crore, while operating profit rose 30.86% to ₹3,369 crore.
The bank also reported consolidated profit after minority interest of ₹2,136.48 crore, up 28.04% year on year. This is a separate measure from standalone net profit and should not be confused with it.
The combination of stronger reported earnings, a rising displayed price and higher OI gives the stock meaningful context in the day’s derivatives report. It does not establish that the results alone caused the share-price move.

What Traders Should Watch Next
The next session will help establish whether the October 27 positioning changes persist beyond the monthly expiry.
First, traders should monitor whether November Nifty futures continue to decline alongside rising OI. A sustained pattern would reinforce the short-buildup classification, although rollover-related effects must still be considered.
Second, the persistence of long buildup in stocks such as Bharti Airtel, PG Electroplast and Bank of Maharashtra will be important. A reversal in price or a reduction in OI could alter their classifications.
Third, the decline in long-buildup signals from 155 to 113 deserves attention. The shift is a measurable change in market breadth, but it does not prove that the broader market has entered a sustained bearish phase.
Bottom Line
NiftyTrader’s October 27 snapshot showed long buildup remaining the largest stock-level category, but bullish classifications declined while short-buildup signals increased. At the same time, November and December Nifty futures displayed falling prices alongside rising OI.
The key development is the divergence between stock-level positioning and the next-month index-futures signal. The change in November futures from long buildup to short buildup is worth monitoring, but expiry-related rollover means it should not be treated as a definitive prediction of the market’s next move.
