The Nifty 50 staged a sharp recovery on Thursday, November 5, surging 576 points, or 2.40%, to close at 24,536.60. Stock futures data revealed a notable shift in positioning, with 88 stocks showing short-covering signals against 80 recording fresh long build-up. The next question for traders is whether fresh buying will strengthen or the recovery will remain vulnerable as short-covering activity fades.

F&O Build-Up November 5: Complete Stock-Wise Breakdown
An analysis of 218 stocks in the stock futures segment found that short covering was the largest category on November 5. However, fresh bullish positioning was also visible across several counters.
| F&O Signal | Stocks | What It Indicates |
|---|---|---|
| Short Covering | 88 | Price up, OI down |
| Long Build-Up | 80 | Price up, OI up |
| Short Build-Up | 30 | Price down, OI up |
| Long Unwinding | 18 | Price down, OI down |
| Neutral | 2 | No change in cash price |
| Total | 218 |
Short covering exceeded fresh long build-up by eight stocks, making it the most widespread positioning signal of the session. It indicates that the number of stocks recording rising prices alongside declining futures open interest was higher than those attracting fresh positions alongside price gains.
This does not establish that short covering caused the Nifty’s rally. It shows that the recovery coincided with widespread reductions in outstanding bearish-positioning signals across individual stocks.

Top Long Build-Up Stocks: ICICI Bank, Bajaj Finance and Ashok Leyland
Long build-up occurs when a stock’s price and futures open interest rise together. This combination is generally associated with fresh bullish positioning.
The following stocks recorded notable long build-up signals on November 5:
| Stock | Price Change | OI Change |
|---|---|---|
| ICICI Bank | +5.33% | +7.82% |
| Bajaj Finance | +7.65% | +6.39% |
| NBCC | +3.33% | +5.70% |
| Swiggy | +5.94% | +5.40% |
| Shriram Finance | +6.08% | +5.12% |
| Ashok Leyland | +10.50% | +4.79% |
ICICI Bank recorded a 7.82% increase in aggregate futures OI alongside a 5.33% price gain. Bajaj Finance also attracted fresh positioning, with OI rising 6.39% as its share price advanced 7.65%.
Ashok Leyland stood out on price performance, gaining 10.50% during the session, accompanied by a 4.79% increase in OI.
These signals indicate that the market recovery was not limited to the unwinding of existing short positions. Several stocks also witnessed an increase in fresh futures exposure.
Short Build-Up Stocks: PI Industries, Bharat Forge and OIL India
Short build-up occurs when a stock’s price declines while its futures OI increases. It generally signals fresh bearish positioning.
Despite the broader market recovery, 30 stocks recorded this combination on November 5.
| Stock | Price Change | OI Change |
|---|---|---|
| PI Industries | -19.07% | +41.80% |
| Bharat Forge | -3.30% | +22.03% |
| OIL India | -3.98% | +20.79% |
| CG Power | -3.88% | +11.66% |
| Nykaa | -1.46% | +11.01% |
| Cummins India | -14.11% | +9.06% |
PI Industries recorded the sharpest negative price movement among these selected stocks, falling 19.07%, while its aggregate futures OI increased 41.80%.
Bharat Forge and OIL India also witnessed significant increases in open interest alongside price declines. Their OI rose 22.03% and 20.79%, respectively.
These counters highlight pockets of weakness that remained even as the benchmark index recovered sharply.
Short Covering Stocks: Jubilant FoodWorks, IREDA and Ujjivan SFB
Short covering occurs when a stock’s price rises while its futures OI declines. The combination is commonly interpreted as traders reducing existing short exposure.
With 88 stocks recording this pattern, short covering was the most widespread signal in the November 5 stock futures breakdown.
Selected stocks showing short-covering signals included:
| Stock | Price Change | OI Change |
|---|---|---|
| Jubilant FoodWorks | +5.01% | -12.68% |
| Ujjivan Small Finance Bank | +3.02% | -6.05% |
| IREDA | +3.92% | -6.01% |
| SAIL | +1.06% | -4.09% |
| Kotak Mahindra Bank | +1.65% | -2.12% |
| IOC | +1.74% | -1.91% |
Jubilant FoodWorks recorded the largest percentage decline in OI among these selected stocks, with positions falling 12.68% as the share price advanced 5.01%.
IREDA and Ujjivan Small Finance Bank also showed notable reductions in outstanding futures positions alongside price gains.
SAIL recorded the largest absolute OI reduction among these selected counters, with outstanding futures positions declining by approximately 7.48 million units.
These movements indicate a reduction in existing bearish exposure, although falling OI alongside rising prices does not independently confirm the direction of every trader’s position.
Long Unwinding Stocks: ITC, BHEL and Bharti Airtel
Long unwinding occurs when both the stock price and futures OI decline, indicating a reduction in existing bullish positions.
Eighteen stocks showed long-unwinding signals during Thursday’s session.
Selected counters included:
| Stock | Price Change | OI Change |
|---|---|---|
| ITC | -0.41% | -2.99% |
| BHEL | -1.36% | -2.63% |
| Bharti Airtel | -0.52% | -2.49% |
| GAIL | -0.12% | -2.03% |
| BEL | -0.73% | -1.20% |
ITC recorded a 2.99% decline in aggregate futures OI alongside a 0.41% fall in its share price. BHEL and Bharti Airtel also showed reductions in both price and open interest.
These signals suggest that traders reduced existing bullish exposure in these stocks despite the broader market’s positive closing.

What Should F&O Traders Watch Next?
The November 5 derivatives positioning shows two simultaneous developments: widespread short-covering signals and fresh long-position creation in several stocks.
The 88 short-covering stocks indicate that reductions in outstanding bearish exposure were widespread. Meanwhile, the 80 long build-up stocks show that fresh bullish positioning was also present.
For the next trading session, traders should watch whether stocks continue to rise alongside increasing open interest. Sustained price gains with rising OI would provide stronger evidence of fresh long participation.
Conversely, if prices continue rising while OI declines, short covering may remain an important feature of the recovery. A return to falling prices with rising OI would signal renewed short build-up.
The 30 stocks already showing short build-up also suggest that bearish positioning has not disappeared across the market.
The key takeaway: November 5 delivered a strong Nifty recovery, but stock futures positioning remained mixed. Short covering was the most widespread signal, while fresh long build-up in 80 stocks provided evidence of additional bullish participation. Traders should monitor the next session’s price and OI combination to judge whether the recovery is attracting sustained fresh buying.
“Before taking a position, traders can also check stock futures data and strike-wise option chain activity for additional confirmation.”
Data Methodology
The analysis compares November 4 and November 5 closing open interest across 649 matched stock-futures contracts covering 218 individual stocks. Aggregate OI was calculated across the matched futures contracts for each stock. Price changes were measured using the corresponding cash-market closing prices.
Long build-up was classified as a price increase with rising OI; short build-up as a price decline with rising OI; short covering as a price increase with falling OI; and long unwinding as a price decline with falling OI. Two stocks with unchanged cash-market closing prices were classified as neutral.
