In 1945, it was being incorporated on 1st September at Mumbai for manufacturing diesel vehicles for commercial use, excavators, industrial shunter, dumpers, heavy forgings, and machine tools. Also, the commercial diesel vehicles which were known `Tata Mercedes Benz' (or TMB) are known as `Tata' vehicles after the expiry of the collaboration agreement with Daimler-Benz AG, West Germany. It also manufactured pulp and paper making machinery. In 1946, it also undertook the manufacture of 5000 'KC' broad gauge open wagons for the Indian Railway. In 1948, the Steam Road Roller introduced in collaboration with Marshal Sons (the UK) 1950 Collaboration signed with M/s Krauss-Maffei, W. Germany for the manufacture of steam locomotives 1954 Collaboration with M/s Daimler and Benz AG, W. Germany, for the manufacture of medium commercial vehicles at Jamshedpur. In 1956, the Steel foundry set up in collaboration with Usines Emile Henricot of Court St. Etienne, Belgium. In 1959, the research and development center was set up at Jamshedpur. In 1960, the company's name, which was Tata Locomotive & Engineering Company Ltd.was changed to Tata Engineering & Locomotive Company Ltd. In 1961, the collaboration with M/s Pawling & Harnischfeger (P&H), the U.S.A. for the manufacture of cable type excavators and cranes. In 1963, a project for the production of large press tools and complex dies was undertaken in collaboration with Raymond. F. Thompson (Engineers) Ltd. UK. In 1965, along with effect from 1st July the Investa Machine Tools and Engineering Co. Ltd. was amalgamated with the company and it became the Machine Tool Division. Some of the Milestones:
  • 1999:
  • It is proposed to make TCECL a one-stop-shop for construction equipment and earthmoving machinery.
  • Telco or TATA Engineering and Locomotive Company Ltd received a consideration of Rs 200 crore as equity and share premium and the rest as loans valued at Rs 400 crore from the sale of its construction equipment division.
  • Also, the SKF Bearings India Ltd signed an agreement with Telco for supplying hub bearings for its latest model Tata Indica.
  • Tata Technologies, which is a Telco subsidiary, launched a value chain management (or VCM) system designed to enable value-based interaction among business partners and manufacturers.
  • Also, it bought a group pension insurance scheme for its employees from the Life Insurance Corporation.
  • 2000:
  • It is working towards introducing the two new petrol-driven variants of its small car Indica, powered by a multi-point fuel injection engine.
  • It also launched the Indica 2000, the Euro II Complaint, 75 BHP multi-point fuel injection (MPFI) version of Indica.
  • It won the National Technology Award for indigenous development and commercialization of the Tata Indica car.
  • It also launched its new hi-tech Indica 2000 car with an MPFI petro engine in Guwahati.
  • The Company is decentralizing the marketing operations of its commercial vehicle business.
  • It decided to defer the launch of its mid-sized passenger car, Magna, to around June 2002.
  • It was also appointed ICICI as a preferred financier for customers buying its range of vehicles, including the Indica.
  • 2001:Both Telco and PSA Peugeot Citroen called off the proposed venture of developing a mid-size passenger car.
  • 2003:

  • It signed a distribution agreement with Rover for Safari in the UK.
  • It overtook Hyundai in the passenger vehicle market.
  • It unveiled 'Tata 207 DI' in Delhi.
  • The Company turns around, posts a profit of Rs 300.11 crore as against the loss of Rs 53.73 crore the previous corresponding period.
  • It unveils 'Tata 207 DI' in Mumbai.
  • The Company name was changed from Tata Engineering & Locomotive Company Ltd. (Telco) to Tata Motors Ltd. (TML) with effect from July 29, 2003
