United Breweries or UBL

This company was being incorporated in the year 1999, is a flagship company of UB Group. The company is also engaged in manufacturing as well as the marketing of the beer. UB Group (Parent Company) –The business interests are in the area of brewing, distilling, aviation, fertilizers, life sciences, research and development, engineering, and IT. It started its journey in 1915 when Thomas Leishman purchased five breweries to form United Breweries with its registered office located in Chennai. And much later late Vittal Mallya bought the company in the year 1947. Currently, about six bottles of Kingfisher are being sold in India every second.

The Milestones:

  1. 1950– United Breweries registered office was moved to Bangalore.
  2. 1960– Company set up Kalyani Breweries.
  3. 1965– UBL set up Kesarwal Beverage in Goa.
  4. ... >1972– High Range Breweries set up in Chertalla in Kerala.
  5. 1974– The company exported beer to Aden and the Middle East.
  6. 1978– UBL established Punjab Breweries.
  7. 1981– The company introduced canned beer.
  8. 1982 – UB's Kingfisher Lager hit parlors in England and the USA.
  9. 1996– UBL brought a 30% equity stake in National Sorghum Breweries in South Africa.
  10. 1997– 98 – The company made an investment in the brewing business in the USA by purchasing 6 Micro Breweries.
  11. 2000 – Associated Breweries & Distilleries and Mangalore Breweries & Distilleries were acquired.
  12. 2001 – Millennium Alcobev (MABL) – a joint venture was formed between Scottish & Newcastle and UBL.
  13. 2001–02– The company acquired GMR Vasavi, MP Breweries. It also received a 41% stake in Inertia Industries, 65% share of Associated Breweries & Distilleries and 97% share of Mangalore Breweries & Distilleries.
  14. 2002 – The UBL acquired the Empee Breweries
  • It owns a flagship brand Kingfisher, which is synonymous with the beer in India and is the most extensive selling beer in India that commands 29% of the market share.
  • The company has a presence in about 52 countries. And it possesses two subsidiaries which are Maltex Malsters and the Associated Breweries & the Distilleries.
  • The company also has its manufacturing units which are located in Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Goa, Punjab, Kerala, Karnataka, West Bengal, Rajasthan, and Orissa. It also undertakes several contract manufacturing via the subsidiary or associated companies. Currently, the company’s products are sold across 32,000 Beer outlets in India.
  • Millennium Alcobev is a joint venture between UBL and Scottish & Newcastle of the UK, in which both companies own a 50% stake.
  1. 2009 – The United Breweries & Heineken Joined Hands to Lead the Indian Beer Market
  2. 2010 – The United Breweries Limited (UBL) launched its Kingfisher Ultra beer, which was made from the finest malt and the hops in the national capital market.

Some Awards:

  1. The UBL won the gold medal at the World Beer Championship held in Chicago.
  2. The company was awarded the first prize in the International Beer Awards which was organized by New Zealand's Hop Marketing Board.
  3. The UBL won the bronze award at the 'Australian International Beer Awards' in the 'International Packaged Beer Section for the year 2000.
