Delhi High Court Restrains Patanjali from Airing Ads Against Dabur Chyawanprash

In a significant legal development, the Delhi High Court on Thursday issued an interim injunction against Patanjali Ayurved, restraining it from broadcasting or publishing advertisements that allegedly disparage Dabur Chyawanprash, a market leader in the Ayurvedic health supplement segment.

The order came from Justice Mini Pushkarna, who ruled in favour of Dabur India’s interim plea, stating, “Application is allowed.” The matter is scheduled for the next hearing on July 14.

What Sparked the Chyawanprash Dispute?

The controversy erupted following a Patanjali advertisement featuring Baba Ramdev, where he was seen questioning the authenticity and Ayurvedic credibility of other Chyawanprash brands. The ad reportedly claimed:

“Jinko Ayurved aur Vedo ka gyaan nahi, Charak, Sushrut, Dhanwantari aur Chyawanrishi ke parampara mei ‘original’ Chyawanprash kaise bana payenge?”

Further, the ad allegedly described a 40-herb Chyawanprash as “ordinary,” which Dabur contended was a direct reference to its own product, widely known for using more than 40 herbs and holding over 60% market share in the segment.

Dabur’s Stand

Dabur accused Patanjali of spreading misleading and disparaging messages that undermine consumer trust in a classical Ayurvedic formulation regulated under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act. It argued that labeling other products as “ordinary” and implying health risks from non-Patanjali Chyawanprash is both misleading and dangerous.

The company also pointed out that Patanjali is a repeat offender, citing past Supreme Court contempt proceedings for similar advertisements targeting competitors.

Market Impact

Dabur, which owns trusted Ayurvedic and wellness brands like Dabur Honey, Honitus, Vatika, and Real Juice, reported a consolidated net profit drop of 8.35% to ₹312.73 crore in Q4 FY25, citing higher expenses and muted demand. Its revenue stood at ₹2,830.14 crore, marginally up from the previous year.
