How is Sensex volume PCR different from Sensex (OI) PCR?

Sensex volume PCR uses today's option trading volume; Sensex OI PCR uses cumulative open interest across sessions. Volume PCR moves fast and shows current order flow. OI PCR moves slowly and shows accumulated positioning. They measure different things — divergences between them are often the most valuable signal.

What is a normal Sensex volume PCR range?

The typical Sensex volume PCR range is roughly 0.7 to 1.4 — slightly wider than Nifty 50 volume PCR because Sensex options markets are thinner. Readings outside this range (below 0.5 or above 1.6) carry actionable signal; readings within the band are usually noise.

Why is Sensex volume PCR usually similar to Nifty volume PCR?

Sensex and Nifty 50 share roughly 28 stocks in their baskets, so sentiment in one index largely reflects sentiment in the other. When the two diverge by more than 0.2-0.3, the gap is usually unsustainable and converges within a few sessions. Some traders use this convergence pattern for pair trades between the two indices.

How often does Sensex volume PCR update?

The metric recalculates every minute during BSE market hours (9:15 AM to 3:30 PM IST, Monday to Friday). Outside market hours, the page shows the previous trading session's final value and intraday trend.

Should I trade based on Sensex volume PCR alone?

Accepted Answer

No single indicator should drive trading decisions. Volume PCR is most useful as one of four or five inputs alongside price action, OI PCR, India VIX, key technical levels, and macro context. Use it to confirm or contradict your primary thesis, not to generate it.

Does Sensex volume PCR work for Sensex futures, or only options?

Accepted Answer

Volume PCR is by definition an options-only metric — it's the ratio of put options volume to call options volume. Sensex futures don't have puts or calls. However, Sensex options sentiment heavily influences Sensex futures pricing, so the volume PCR signal is relevant to futures traders as well — particularly when planning hedges or directional futures positions.
